We are committed to enforcing approved working hours in the country, says Ministry

There had been recent media reports about a major hotel in the country flouting existing laws on working hours of its employees.

While the hotel said it was probing the matter internally, the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labor and Social Affairs (MADLSA) acknowledged it was aware of the reports and would investigate it further.

It also encouraged workers to report such issues if they ever came across it.

“Working hours in Qatar are strictly regulated and recruitment fees are illegal. Where violations of the law occur, workers are encouraged to report these and they have multiple mechanisms to do so. This is also backed up by the ministry's labour inspection teams who regularly investigate employers who’re suspected to be in breach of the law,” the ministry was quoted as saying in a statement by The Peninsula.

Officials have been working closely with the International Labour Organisation, as well as countries who send workers to Qatar, in a bid to eliminate employment fees at the source. It has also introduced mechanisms to prevent contract substitution.

MADLSA added it would work to ensure its labour force was protected by the best possible legal standards when it comes to employment. It said employers should be aware that the ministry will act to enforce existing laws and that companies who break the law will be prosecuted, reported Qatar Tribune.
