UAE restores postal service to Qatar, first time since start of blockade

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has restarted its postal services to Qatar, for the first time since the start of the blockade in June 2017, Reuters has reported.

According to the news agency, the step follows a United Nations Universal Postal Union (UPU) meeting, convening officials from the postal services of Qatar and the blockading nations.

Held at the UPU headquarters in Bern, Switzerland on January 29, the meeting focused on reviewing ways to enhance ties.

“The discussions were very positive,” a UPU spokesman, David Dadge, told Bloomberg, adding, “Hopefully this is a sign of better arrangements in the future.”

Bloomberg also reported that an internal circular from Emirates Post directed the restoring of the route from the UAE from February 9, quoting “work necessity” and “demand on services.”

The postal service from UAE to Qatar will be via Oman, the circular noted, as there are currently no direct flights between Qatar and UAE.

UAE, along with Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Bahrain, severed all ties with Qatar including diplomatic and trade ties, in June 2017.

Although there were some signs of a possible diffusion of the Gulf crisis last year, no concrete solution has been achieved.
