UAE files a WTO complaint against Qatar over banning goods from the country

The UAE has officially filed a complaint against Qatar at the World Trade Organisation (WTO), saying Doha has imposed a ban on Emirati products.

“The UAE’s action comes after the Qatari ministry of economy banned the sale of consumer goods manufactured in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt,” the UAE’s state news agency WAM reported, according to Reuters.

However, the report did not specify when the complaint was filed. Qatari officials could not immediately be reached for comments.

Four neighbouring countries — Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE — had imposed an illegal siege on Qatar in June 2017.

A month later, Qatar had filed a wide-ranging legal complaint at the WTO to challenge the trade boycott by the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. The case is still ongoing.

After the imposition of the blockade, Qatar opened up new trade routes with Turkey, Iran, India and Morocco to ensure food security. It also started producing its own food, which is set to begin exporting by the end of the year.

The UAE also accused Qatar of removing the names of Emirati companies from the list of approved vendors for infrastructure projects and has maintained an ‘undeclared ban’ on products coming from the Emirates.

Qatar had banned products originating from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Bahrain, in May 2018.

The reaction on Twitter was swift and brutal.

Today’s joke brought to you by #UAE.

This is subtle reminder of UAE’s hypocrisy and the audacity they have. This is also the same country that placed a blockade on #Qatar and blocked the sea, land, and air routes during the fasting month of Ramadan. well said @Reem_AlHarmi

They are mistaken again, 1st time they conspire and place a blockade without any valid reason. 2nd they file a complain in WTO against Qatar for not allowing their product in the country. There are totally delusional.
