Speed limit on February 22nd Street restored to 100kmph
The speed limit on February 22nd Street has been restored to 100km/h from 80km/h, according to local Arabic daily Arrayah.
The move by the Traffic Department comes in response to a recommendation made by the Advisory Council in April on reverting to the earlier speed limit (100km/h). The change came into effect on August 2nd.
The road is considered as an expressway and a reduced speed limit may cause delays and even result in accidents, it was felt.
Early this year, the Traffic Department reduced the speed limit to 80km/h on an experimental basis. It was done to see if a lower speed limit on the road, on which accidents and congestion were common, would help improve the situation.
Several citizens were unhappy with the experiment and asked authorities to restore the speed-limit back to 100kmph in January.
Motorists are asking the Traffic Dept. to change the speed limit on Doha Expressway back to 100 km/h. Thoughts?

It was observed that when an accident took place on February 22nd Street, several vehicles would often be involved in the mishap - holding up traffic for a long time. Speeding and tailgating were often responsible for these accidents.
Congestion on the road, too, had been a major concern for motorists as well as the authorities.
Meanwhile, some motorists felt that the design of exit and entry points along the road was the main concern, in addition to the reckless driving habits of some people. [Gulf Times]
Major reasons of Near Misses and Fatal Accidents in Qatar :
Reckless Drivers..
Tailgating, honking and giving dippers..
No signal while changing lane(s)..
Mostly into mobile phones..
Driving slow on fast lanes..
Overtaking from right lane and shoulder lane..
RACING in traffic..
Jumping Red light..
Driving 140-150km/h and braking suddenly before cameras..
Not respecting other drivers because of their vehicles and nationalities..
Always in hurry to reach somewhere or NOWHERE !!
and list will go ON............
Among a lot of my gripes here one thing on the highway that defies logic is why those drivers, namely those who drive GMC Pick ups and Land-cruisers tailgate drivers on the fast lane then suddenly take the slip road. If your coming off the highway just stay in the slow lane. Oh wait your ego wont allow that...
And there is this too http://www.qatarliving.com/cars-0/posts/road-gripes-about-roundabouts-qatar
"....Speeding and tailgating were often responsible for these accidents"-- so it does make sense to increase speed limit and result in more accidents???
That's true,Mary and I fully agree with you.I rarely honked earlier but now I am forced to when I see these pilots texting and bullok-karting on major roads.
Just yesterday ,had narrowly missed mishap because the driver of the cab was on phone more then the road ..Once he raised his head, suddenly found a pedestrian ahead, and withouf a side glance, swerved so hard that he was just inches away ,hitting other road users/vehicles.Seen these things first hand from rear passenger seat!
No wonder what a single handed over steer can play havoc with lives of others on the road.
"Speeding and tailgating were often responsible for these accidents." If that is the case then they should actually reduce the maximum speed to 60 km/h. The "logic" of the Traffic Department is not from this world.
People who change lanes without signalling at the last minute; people who are using their cellphones; people who can't/don't use their mirrors properly; people who do less than half the limit because they are either nervous drivers or are using their phones; people who slow down at all radars to 10 - 20km less than the limit because they can't trust/read their speedometers; cars that are not roadworthy and/or mechanically incapable of safely keeping up with traffic; too many overloaded passenger vans; people who fail to maintain their tail and/or headlights in proper working order.... I could go on and on. Being respectful of these people who are failing to respect the laws and therefore are disrespecting all other drivers?? Get real - they should be removed from the road and fined.
First, please respect other road users regardless of their kind of vehicle and nationalities. In a matter of seconds anything may happen that will surely change your life and regret it.
Road Courtesy and Etiquette both are lacking to some drivers in Qatar, hence the crazy driving skills. It should be included in the driving exam for driving license.
