Sky high fish prices surprise residents of Qatar
Fish is turning out to be a luxury product in Qatar, as fish prices have been shooting up over the recent past.
The huge hike in prices, according to some sellers, has been mainly due to the strong off shore winds. Also, the permission granted earlier this week for exporting fish to the neighbouring GCC countries, mainly Saudi Arabia, too has contributed to the huge rise in rates.
King fish was priced on Saturday in the range of QR67-80 per kg at retail outlets. The wholesale price of Hamour was QR70/kg.
“Some of the regular fish buyers said they were forced to return empty handed from the Doha Central Market owing to such extremely high prices”, reports Gulf Times.
Fish was heavily exported from the main market between Monday and Wednesday and it created an apparent shortage in the local market, traders said.
According to a certain retailer, there should not have been any export to Saudi Arabia earlier this week when there was good demand locally. Such a situation has made such varieties as king fish highly expensive in Doha, it is understood.
Even Sheri prices had touched QR40 or so in Saudi Arabia a week ago and hence the suppliers chose to send their stocks there, a trader said. At that time, the variety was being sold for about QR12/kg in Qatar. Yesterday, Sheri cost QR23/kg even in the wholesale market.
According to a wholesaler prices are expected to remain at the current levels for the next few days as there is an apparent shortage due to poor catch.
Inquiries made among fishermen found the ongoing winds have prevented most fishing vessels from venturing out into the sea.
brit and acchabaccha your comments are extremely hilarious !! damn those names are messed up !
I tried several times to pronounce the names in full but failed. I succeeded with the help of an oxygen mask though!
I'd imagine Brits fishermen can't readily remember their own names when they first wake up in the morning...
Damn! Pooba is not a good fisherman
Oh My! Their passport names may not hold their full name...and what a challenge when they fill out the declaration forms as well as the landing cards when they visit foreign countries ;)
dear britey, Mr. Maruthhurputaram Gopalamenonvithram Ramachandran Venkatanarasimharajuvaripeta is gone on vacation to Gods own country, his son Mr. Poobalanpillaynathanvarghese Gopalsekaranmukehshan Rangeelarajan Pillay is handling the business now....:(
Tilapia is not good for your health...the fish absorbs too much pollutants and has least nutritional value.
I don't care.. My friend Mr. Maruthhurputaram Gopalamenonvithram Ramachandran Venkatanarasimharajuvaripeta has his own boat and he brings in fresh Queen fish whenever I need it
Too much cost cutting ground around, and here we have hike in price for the fishes....:(
How will we survive....:( will stick to Karak and poppadums.
Avoid King Fish. Eat Thilapia
