Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation (QF) graced the official opening of the Education City Golf Club (ECGC) yesterday.

ECGC welcomed golf stars from around the globe for the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters 2020, which is the first international tournament to be held at the venue.

This is the first time in the tournament’s 23-year history that it is being held at a new location other than its previous home, the Doha Golf Club.

Also, present on the occasion was Her Excellency, QF Vice Chairperson and CEO, Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani.

During her visit, HH Sheikha Moza toured the world-class facilities at the club, which ambitions to not only serve as a host venue for prestigious competitions but also to promote the game of golf among the wider community.

Qatar Golf Association president Hassan Al Naimi, Commercial Bank managing director Omar Hussain Al Fardan, Board of Directors member Abdul Rahman bin Hamad Al Attiyah, Group CEO Joseph Abraham, PGA European Tour CEO Keith Pelley and leading professional golfer Catriona Matthew also joined the tour of the facility.

President of Community Development at QF, Machaille Hassan Al Naimi commented on the occasion, “Through the opportunities it offers and its ethos as a venue, the Education City Golf Club reflects Qatar Foundation’s commitment to promoting healthy, active lifestyles and the importance of well-being, and emphasizes the fact that sport is for all.”

Calling ECGC an “inclusive facility,” Al Naimi said it has paved the way for children, adults, and families to explore golfing and its benefits such as physical fitness, mental stimulation and social interaction.

“We look forward to welcoming people from across Qatar and beyond to experience the Education City Golf Club, which adds to the array of publicly-available, community-focused facilities at Qatar Foundation while also supporting Qatar’s national tourism goals and enhancing the nation’s global profile as a sporting destination,” she mentioned.

She further said that the decision to move the tournament to ECGC was underpinned by the desire to enhance community involvement and highlight Qatar as a destination for golf lovers.

ECGC is not only a landmark for Qatar but also considered as one of the top-ranked golfing facilities in the world.

The Club comprises of three golf courses: the 18-hole championship course that makes its way through desert and wadi terrain; the nine-hole par 3 course, with holes ranging from 100-175 yards in length, that further enhances the facility; and the six-hole championship course that features two par 3’s, three par 4’s and one par five, meant to give juniors, beginners and families the opportunity to experience a world-class golf course in a shorter format.

The impressive club has been designed by Spanish architect, José María Olazábel, and is located on the outskirts of Doha set against the backdrop of the Education City Stadium, which will host the FIFA World Cup 2022 matches, up-to-the quarter-final stages.

It is my first time in Qatar, and my first opportunity to visit the Education City Golf Club. The course is excellent, the facilities are brilliant, and the immediate reaction from the players has been incredibly positive,” said Pelley at the official opening.
