Sheikh Thani makes largest individual donation of $35m to UNHCR

As a nation, Qatar has always displayed a generous spirit, by being at the forefront of offering financial support to victims of natural disasters and extreme living conditions.
It is no surprise then that the people of Qatar also embrace this philanthropic spirit and extend their support to those in need in a way that sets an example for the world.
In a press release shared by UNHCR on Tuesday, the UN Refugee agency, announced that it had received “the largest donation from an individual,” hailing from the State of Qatar.
The $35 million donation comes from a prominent Qatari businessperson, Sheikh Thani Bin Abdullah Bin Thani Al Thani who bestowed the amount for victims of displacement: Rohingyas in Bangladesh and displaced Yemenis.
Worth US$ 35,215,260, the donation covers a one-year cooperation agreement and two grant agreements, according to the press release.
The agreements were signed in Geneva on April 16 by UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi and Sheikh Dr. Khalid Bin Thani Bin Abdullah Bin Thani Al Thani, on behalf of His Excellency Sheikh Thani Bin Abdullah Bin Thani Al-Thani.
“This is an extraordinary contribution that will bring vital help to hundreds of thousands of people whose lives have been torn apart by conflict and displacement,” said High Commissioner Grandi.
Sheikh Dr. Khalid Bin Thani Bin Abdullah Bin Thani Al-Thani commented, “It is a privilege and an immense opportunity to support [the] most vulnerable people. H.E. Sheikh Thani Bin Abdullah Bin Thani Al-Thani hopes that through the Thani Bin Abdullah Bin Thani Al-Thani Humanitarian Fund, he is able to impact as many lives as possible and will continue to support the displaced through UNHCR’s programs.”
The donation has been made under UNHCR’s Zakat initiative, which was established in 2016. The program is fully compliant with the principles of Islamic social financing and provides an efficient way for people to fulfill zakat obligations.

The donation will be divided into two parts.
The first will focus on providing 300,000 internally displaced persons, returnees and members of the host community across Yemen with multi-purpose cash assistance and cash for shelter with an amount of US$ 13,000,260.
The second will support an estimated 670,000 Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh with a focus on health, nutrition and shelter for a total amount of US$ 22,215,000, according to UNHCR.
According to current statistics shared by UNHCR, more than 900,000 Rohingya refugees, including women and children, in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, have been forced to flee violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine State and are in urgent need of live-saving support.
An estimated 24 million people in Yemen are facing humanitarian crisis and are struggling to survive amid a continuous search for safety, shelter and emergency aid.

Good work...
But it was better if he distribute this money with his hands rather than giving it to UNHCR...as huge amount of its share will go for paying salaries of UNHCR Employees.
