Saudi lifts ban on travel to Umrah by private cars

QatarNews
By QatarNews

Saudi authorities have lifted a ban on Umrah pilgrims from Qatar and some other GCC states from travelling to Saudi Arabia in Private cars.

The ban imposed during the last Umrah Season has been lifted ahead of the new season which begins mid-November, reported Al-Sharq.

It also reported that the ban on people to visit to GCC states from travelling to Saudi Arabia for Umrah will prevail.

The decision had led to a significant fall in the number of Umrah pilgrims from Qatar last year since many expats prefer to travel in their private cars along with their families.

Some new regulations for those travelling in private cars are laid down by the Saudi Haj Ministry and are as follows –

  • Mentioning the type of car on visa.
  • The pilgrims must be linked with an authorized Umrah tour operator and thus will be automatically registered with the Saudi Ministry.
  • A list of pilgrims travelling will be required which should be approved by the company concerned.

It is also reported that Saudi Arabia plans to triple the number of visas it issues for Umrah for the coming year. [Peninsula]

It is a good news that Saudi Authorities have lift ban on travel to Umrah by private car. I also agree with you in this matter that pilgrims must be linked with an authorized Umrah tour operator which provide best Umrah Packages.

Is there any update on this regard,

The travel agents still conveys that there is nothing official confirming the above for the Saudi Embassy, and agents are reluctant in providing Visas.

Any one recently traveled for Umrah in their private cars?

Saudi Immigration is not permitting GCC expats to enter Saudi in our personal cars ....you have to either travel by flight or bus....

Despite of confirming with the Saudi embassy prior to leaving for Umrah from Qatar I was sent back yesterday as they said that they have not received any official confirmation to let us in with our cars....

I find it all rather confusing. If the Saudi authorities are not allowing it , then how can an agent issue such a visa ?

You can travel with your own private vehicle, no problem, but as for hotel and the rest, you have to register with an authorised tour operator and pay them high travel fees so that they may take care of it. Forget about booking a cheap hotel room through booking.com as you'll never get a Saudi Umrah visa if you do. Not such great news...

Authorised tour operator means you are going to have to register with an authorised Qatar-based tour operator and pay them travel fees for the Saudi authorities to accept to issue you a visa. Are you still so happy, everyone?

Good news. But I did not understand "The pilgrims must be linked with an authorized Umrah tour operator and thus will be automatically registered with the Saudi Ministry". What does it mean? If I go using my own car then I will get visa from Saudi embassy and will book hotel via booking.com. Then why do I need to be linked to some operator?
