Starting this month, consumers will have to pay a sanitation fee, which is 20 percent of the monthly water bill, the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA.) has reminded in a post on its Twitter page.

This announcement regarding the new fee was made by Ashghal in December 2020.

The fee will become part of the monthly water bill for non-Qatari residents and establishments of any kind.

The sanitation service fee will be equivalent to 20 percent of the value of the monthly water bill issued by KAHRAMAA.

This calculation of the fee will begin with the “consumption bill for January 2021, which will be issued in February 2021," Ashghal had stated earlier.

This new fee comes under the implementation of the Resolution (No. 211) of 2019, issued by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), determining fees for various Ashghal services offered to establishments and individuals.

The aim is to improve the efficiency and quality of infrastructure services provided by the government as well as to rationalize water consumption and preserve Qatar’s water resources, in the context of rising global water scarcity.

This fee will only be applicable for expats and commercial establishments. Qatari citizens are exempt from the service fee.

It will be calculated at 20 percent of the value of the monthly water bill.

For instance, if the value of the water bill is QR 300, the value of wastewater charges will be QR60.

Wastewater is transported through substations and major pumping stations to huge treatment plants. After going through several complex procedures and sterilization processes, the water can be used again for different purposes such as irrigation of green areas, cooling, among others.
