Rumour about fine for checking mobile phone at traffic signals untrue
Rumours have an ability to catch on like wildfire. One of the latest rumours doing the rounds in Qatar is that drivers will be fined QR150 and docked 12 points for checking their mobile phones while stationary at traffic signals.
The message, along with a picture which showed workers fixing a camera, soon went viral. However The Peninsula reported that this was nothing but a rumour and has no truth in it.
The newspaper quoted a source from the traffic department as saying that the rumour is false. There is neither a fine nor any docking of points.
The image of the camera’s installation, as well as those showing people caught for the offence, are fake.
While usage of mobile phones while driving is an offence, there are no laws preventing people from checking them while stationary at traffic signals.
