In rare verdict, a drug trafficker has been sentenced to death in Doha
A Doha criminal court took the unusual step of sentencing a man to death for his part in smuggling 120kg of hashish and opium into the country by sea. Four of his accomplices were also hit with hefty fines and jail terms, reported The Peninsula.
The first accused was imposed a QR500,000 fine and awarded the death penalty. The second and third accused were given life imprisonment and QR500,000 fines each.
The fourth (seven years jail, QR200,000 fine) and fifth accused (one year, QR10,000) were also punished. The fifth man was given leniency as he had only used the drug and not possessed them.
The court also confiscated the seized drugs, mobile phones and diving gears that were used for committing the crime. The crime came to light when a coast guard found three barrels of hashish and opium near Qatari waters. The five smugglers were caught while diving to take out this drug consignment from deep sea.
The security agencies had acted on a tip off received at anti-drugs department that one of the accused was trading in drugs and he was found diving in deep sea to take out drugs consignment hidden there dropped by the smugglers.
A smuggler was arrested in the coastal area when his car broke down in sand as the police was tracing him as they became suspicious of his presence there.
In the US they would let them all go free. Qatar keep your laws and punishments do not become like Europe and the US
