Qatar may still be under an illegal blockade by neighbouring countries led by Saudi Arabia, but that has not stopped Qatari troops from taking part in military drills organised there.

Members of the Qatari Armed Forces, taking part in the joint Dir’ Al Jazeera (Peninsula Shield) exercise, arrived at the King Abdulaziz Air Base in Saudi Arabia yesterday, reported Qatar Tribune.

Qatar had taken part in the same drill last year, where land, air and sea troops from 25 countries had held joint exercises.

This year’s exercise is set to continue until March 12.

The joint Gulf exercise aims to unify military strategic concepts and plans further, and increase coherence and synergy between the participating forces from the GCC countries.

The Qatari force was received upon arrival by the head of the reception committee Brigadier General Nasser Ibrahim Al Salem.

Qatari Armed Forces leader Brigadier General Khamis Mohammed Dablan said the exercise supports the bonds of cooperation and relations between GCC countries, highlights synergy in the military field and keeps abreast of the development to face challenges and dangers of various kinds.
