Qatar plans decongestion of Doha city
Several main roads in the city may soon be permanently declared one-way streets with the aim of regulating traffic in a smoother way to ensure there are no traffic jams.
This is part of a solution the authorities have come up with as part of a four-year plan to regulate traffic and end chaos on Doha’s roads.
Massive plans are also afoot to develop internal streets within the city to ensure smooth traffic flow.
This was disclosed by a senior official from the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning yesterday.
Assistant Undersecretary at the Ministry, Ali Al Abdullah, told the Advisory Council that he agreed with Council members that traffic snarls were a major problem in Doha and hence the Ministry was taking the above steps to address the issue.
He said studies conducted by his Ministry had confirmed an acute shortage of retail shops and affordable housing.
The findings have been referred to the agencies concerned (for their attention).
He said that a total of 65 studies had been conducted on the real estate situation in the country, and some 207 reports had been prepared and forwarded to several government agencies.
As for office space and high-end residential units, the official said they were surplus and expected to meet the requirements of a rising population beyond 2015.
In Pearl-Qatar and the Towers area of West Bay, residential units in the high-end category were in excess, he said.
Al Abdullah was invited to the Advisory Council yesterday to make a presentation on Qatar Master Plan (development plan).
The plan, incorporated in a draft law, is with the Advisory Council for discussion and review. The Council approved the draft and sent it back to the State Cabinet.
Al Abdullah said some 50 villages in the country were being redeveloped by Ashghal for the purpose of decongesting Doha. More villages will be redeveloped in future.
The installation of basic infrastructure in these villages will be completed in two years by Ashghal.
The official said that a livestock market each was being developed in the north, south and west of the country, but the plans had been delayed.
He said government schools being built now were spacious and covered an area of 30,000 square metres. The idea is to provide enough space for training for the Fifa event in 2022.
These schools were earlier built over a space of 10,000 square metres. The space was later doubled to 20,000 square metres, and now it has been trebled.

no. 1 causing traffic here are the private taxis (car lift).
The big shots should reduce their personnel cars to one if required than only they should bring their cars on road, this could help in traffic jam on the road
Obviously...the residential units are so expensive & they expect everyone to stay there. The council should take note of the hike in apartments & bring the cost down as it will be impossible to live in the coming years.
