Qatar to launch global awareness drive on role of sport in sustainable development
In recent years, Qatar has worked diligently to establish itself as a powerful sporting hub in the region.
In addition to setting up world-class sporting facilities locally, the country has been working to advance the power of sports to unify, empower and drive positive social change amongst youth and underprivileged communities across the world.
Qatar seeks to use the 2022 World Cup to introduce a global awareness drive to advance the role of sport as a catalyst in achieving sustainable development, justice and peace, the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and international organizations in Vienna announced yesterday.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 14th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, His Excellency Sultan bin Salmeen Al Mansouri, highlighted that the global program for the implementation of the Doha Declaration has led to the integration of sport in boosting the capabilities of countries to use sport in crime prevention amongst the youth.
The program has also contributed to raising societal awareness on the power of sport in preventing crimes with the creation of several social, educational, health and training programs, he mentioned.
The legacy of the global program that Qatar proudly funds has become a significant part of “our common global heritage to build upon,” HE Al Mansouri said.
He also mentioned that the activities under the global program for the Implementation of the Doha Declaration have helped in understanding that integrating sports-based approaches in more comprehensive programs, policies and mechanisms are all the more important for crime prevention.
As Qatar recognizes the value of sport as an effective tool to foster development and attain peace, to enhance dialogue between countries, and to immunize youngsters against crime and drugs, it has invested a great deal in sports endeavors internationally, HE Al Mansouri underlined.
The Qatari official also delivered another speech on the sidelines of the Kyoto Conference. The speech pertained to enhancing rehabilitation programs in prisons and post-release services.
The global program for the implementation of the Doha Declaration has devoted one of its four pillars to the rehabilitation and reintegration of prisoners into society, provided that protecting society from crime and limiting return to criminality, according to the UN rules, can only be achieved if the prison period is used to ensure that these persons are reintegrated as much as possible into society upon their release, he said.
HE Al Mansouri reiterated Qatar’s support to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime in the area of prison reform and the rehabilitation of prisoners.
The Qatari delegation participating in the UN Congress also met with the Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Dr Ghada Wali.
At the meeting, the Qatari delegation affirmed their country's eagerness to continue supporting the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and its various activities, focused on combating terrorism, organized crime, drug trafficking, and corruption in the world.
