Qatar exit permit reform to be enforced by ‘end of the month,’ says ITUC top official
Qatar made huge waves recently when it announced that it was going to do away with the system of exit permits once and for all.
The decision was widely welcomed by expatriates in the country as well as international trade unions around the world.
It has now come to light that the decision regarding exit permits will come into effect by the end of October, according to The Peninsula.
Sharan Burrow, head of the International Trade Union Confederation, revealed this information after meeting Qatar’s Prime Minister and Labour Minister in Doha.
“We’ve seen significant progress. First of all we’ve seen the end of the exit visa law and that’ll be now implemented by the end of October,” she said.
“Everybody’s aware that this is a big shift and that it’ll actually take a period of time but formally it’ll be implemented by the end of the month,” Burrows was quoted as saying by Economic Times.
Under the landmark labour law, only a maximum 5% of each company’s workforce — thought to be those in the most senior positions — will still need permission to leave Qatar.
Qatar's decision to abolish its controversial exit permit system will come into force by the end of October. Qatar announced in September it had approved legislation to scrap the exit system, which requires all expats to obtain their employers' permission to leave the country.
Scrapping the exit permit is the biggest announcement made so far since Qatar agreed on last November to enter into a three-year agreement with the UN’s International Labour Organisation to oversee reform.
