Qatar builds food, fodder reserves with an eye on future
Food security is one of the most important issues facing any country. If recent developments are anything to go by, then Qatar is slowly, but surely waking up to its importance.
The Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) announced the completion of the first phase of the strategic reserves of food and fodder programme, reports Qatar Tribune.
The Ministry has built up a strategic reserve for a number of food items and fodder covering the strategic needs of the country.
The MEC has provided 10 storage bunkers for food and fodder. While the total storage space has reached 107,446 square metres, the capacity of the storage bunkers is 125,000 tonnes.
The items being stored include rice, sugar, milk, oil and fodder. The number of distributors of food and fodder in the country has reached 94, including 82 distributers of food, seven of fodder and four of both food and fodder.

I can understand the need to store fodder, but many food items have short shelf lives and will cost lots to replenish regularly..
