Qatar Airways deny reports in Indian media about plans of joint bid for Air India

There had been reports swirling around in the media that Qatar Airways was in talks with IndiGo to bid for India’s national carrier Air India.

However, Qatar Airways has now denied the reports and said that it was not interested in a joint bid for Air India, which the Indian government is planning to sell.

“We’re aware of the reports in India, but we aren’t interested in the bid. We deny the report that we’re making a bid on Air India along with IndiGo,” a Qatar Airways spokesperson told Gulf Times.

Ever since the government cleared a proposal to sell the debt-run Air India, several companies have expressed an interest in buying some of its businesses, according to NDTV Profit.

In January, the government gave its nod for a proposal to allow foreign investors to own up to 49% of Air India. InterGlobe Aviation, Tata Group and Turkey’s Celebi Aviation Holdings have expressed an interest in acquiring the carrier since then.

Air India has six subsidiaries - three of which are loss-making — with assets worth about $4.6bn. It has an estimated $1.24bn worth of real estate, including hotels, according to a report by news agency Reuters.

The government has injected $3.6bn since 2012 to bail out Air India, whose debts have ballooned to $8.5bn.

accha: to be fair, Qatar Living too did pick up the story and run it on the site; journalistic etiquette would then require that once QL knew the reports were not accurate, they would own up to their error and publish this latest update as an open and referenced 'correction'; rather than gloss over their own part in it completely with statement like 'there'd been reports swirling in the media'; QL too was part of the swirl and the media and they can't just suddenly act oblivious.
