The Pearl Qatar has been experiencing a power failure due to some electrical problems for several hours now and is unclear when power will be restored.

Doha News reports that the residences and businesses in Porto Arabia, Viva Bahriya, Medina Centrale and Qanat Quartier have been affected by the power outage. Some traffic lights have also been reportedly ouf of order.

Elevators in apartment complexes have stopped working resulting in a chaotic rush during the usual school and work run.

According to Doha News, some buildings have even been evacuated after the fire alarm went off.

The Facebook page of Pearl Qatar has announced that Kahramaa is fully aware of the situation and are working to bring back the power in the island.

As a result of electrical problems beyond our control, The Pearl-Qatar is currently experiencing a power outage....

Posted by The Pearl-Qatar on Monday, February 29, 2016

The outage was caused after two main Kahramaa power cables were damaged during road works under Al Khartiyat bridge near IKEA. A source told Qatar Living that it would take more than a day to be repaired.

The temporary mobile power generators provided by Kahramaa were seen setting up earlier in the afternoon, so it is expected to take a while before the power is restored completely. The generators will be powering the vital electrical facilities including the sewerage plant and water pumping station.

The minister of Energy and the president of Kahramaa were also on-site to make sure restoration was going ahead as planned.

Yes, it's still a bit of a mess with no power on when I left for work this morning at 6.10am. Credit to Heatrae Sadia though there was still hot water for a shower!

Shangi La did well, their 50% off gig worked a treat. Sold out last night.

Yeah, have mercy with the officials, because they don't know what they are doing.

Respect to the minister to show up on site - regardless of how westerners go crazy about how bad this is, that wouldn't happen in other places!

The incompetence is continuing. They don't even have a contingency plan for the "most prestigious" residential area in Qatar. Outrageous.

Yes, it's a bit of a mess. The battery back up in a fire alarm system will only last so long (12 - 24hrs) if there's no battery back up / fire detection the buildings will not be safe to inhabit.

Imagine living on the 19th floor when the lifts give up too... Ouch.

Blackouts occur everywhere (except Blighty)..... It's no big deal- unless you turn it into headline news..
