Qatar has been gone above and beyond in its fight against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

Based on the indicators of the spread of the virus in the community, as well as public health indicators which are continuously monitored in Qatar, the second portion of the fourth phase of the gradual lifting of restrictions will start tomorrow, September 15, 2020.

During the press conference on September 14, 2020, Dr. Abdullatif Al Khal, Chair of the National Strategic Group on COVID-19 and Head of the Infectious Diseases Division at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) said the phased approach to reopening public places is working well.

Dr. Abdullatif Al Khal updated the following:

- Here in Qatar and around the world children continue to be at very low risk of serious symptoms.

- Since students returned to classrooms from September 1, 2020, several positive cases have been reported in both students and teachers in schools.

- Track and trace teams have found that these positive cases did not catch the virus when attending schools, however, they caught the virus mainly at home during social gatherings.

-  While any new case among children is of concern it is important that we consider the big picture and review the data.

- In nearly two weeks since students returned to school, MoPH identified a small number of positive cases among children and teachers. While any new case among children is of concern, it is important that we put this into context.

- Out of more than 350,000 students and over 35,000 teachers in Qatar, less than 0.2 percent have tested positive since schools reopened.

- The phased approach to reopening public places is working well. As we have seen with the return to malls, mosques, workplaces, and offices, if people adhere to the preventive measures and follow the official advice, Qatar can safely return to normal life.

- The same goes for schools.

- All preventive measures are in place to keep children safe while at school.

Mohamad Al Bashri, Adviser to the Minister of Education and Higher Education said in the press conference that blended learning while maintaining attendance of 30 percent will continue. Parents will be given an option to continue blended learning or shift to online learning. He urged parents to decide carefully as this should be the final decision as it involves many procedures for schools.

Additionally, the Ministry of Public Health today (MoPH), it was revealed that Qatar has become one of the  first countries in the world to launch a new saliva-based COVID-19 test for all children who require a COVID-19 test.
