NHRC urges UAE to let families separated under blockade to reunite

The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) of Qatar has called on UAE authorities to adhere to the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) directive and allow families of Qatari citizens in UAE, separated under the unfair blockade, to reunite.
The Committee reminded the UAE to comply with its obligations as a signatory of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.
Despite ICJ’s order issued on 23 July 2018, and several other international appeals from a number of global organizations, the UAE continues to violate human rights and hinder Qatari citizens and their families in the UAE to unify, reported the Gulf Times.
In a statement released yesterday, NHRC said it has been monitoring the ongoing human rights violations carried out by the UAE that have disregarded all international conventions, agreements, norms and basic humanitarian principles.

"Mixed families continue to face an uncertain future, under critical circumstances which change the lives of thousands of families in the Gulf region, due to the severe restrictions imposed by the countries of the blockade on relations with the State of Qatar, leading to family dispersal, in the first place," the statement highlighted.
The Committee shed light on one of the most recent cases of such a violation. Shaqraa Mohamed Obaid, an Emirati citizen married to Fahd Abdullah Dhiyab, a Qatari citizen, left Qatar with her two sons (aged 2 years and 4 months) on January 23, 2019 to visit her family in the UAE.
"She is currently banned from leaving the UAE with her two children, in violation of her right to family reunification," the NHRC is quoted to have said by Qatar Tribune.
According to the Committee 87 such cases of violations to family reunification have been registered since the ICJ’s order that sees UAE going against the mandate it is obligated to follow.
"The National Human Rights Committee of the State of Qatar calls on UAE authorities to comply with the International Court of Justice order No. 172 dated 23 July 2018 and to allow the UAE citizen and her two Qatari children to leave the UAE immediately," the statement added.
