Newspapers still more credible in GCC
The print media is suffering in the West with its digital version reigning supreme, but in Qatar and other GCC states, people still have faith in the written word, says a top media manager.
Newspapers have more credibility in Qatar and the rest of the GCC region, and are used as points of reference by people, the media manager told a forum late last week.
The event was the sixth edition of Public Relations and Communications Forum, attended by journalists and managers from local Arabic news organisations.
Social media and online newspapers are active in Qatar but people don’t trust what they report unless it is corroborated by the print media, according to him. Some reports can be found only in local newspapers and provide more details.
Newspapers are also available online in their PDF formats so they can compete with news websites and digital and online newspapers.
The print media may be on a decline in the West, but is still influential in the GCC and Arab world, said the manager.
Social media is active in the region but tends to post brief news items and this prompts people to look up to the print media for details.
So, online media complements its printed version in the region rather than giving competition to elbow the latter out of reckoning. “We are confident that the print media will continue to be popular in the region in the near future,” said the media manager.
He said in Qatar and the rest of the region and the Arab world, the print media has an edge when it comes to covering local news and events.
“The real competition of the print media with TV channels, wire agencies and the digital media is not in the realm of international news. It is in local news and events, more particularly social news,” he said.
The Public Relations Director of the Ministry of Interior, Colonel Abdullah Al Muftah, said the ministry’s Facebook had 100,000 followers.
“The ministry is keen to use latest technology and this keeps it in close touch with people.”
He said some ministries and government agencies have in-house magazines to document events. However, since these publications use recycled paper they aren’t liked much by people.

Fubar, You 've to agree that trends / fashions aren't permanent in our society. I use both options but being vigilante has many advantages .................. Sun , 13.07.2014, 09.22 hrs
Did you comment on this page just to tell people that you are against their opinions? Doesn't that make you a bit of a hypocrite?
There's more fraud & distrust in digital world as compared to print media. ....... Sun , 13.07.2014, 08.22

Newspapers more credible, says man who requests anonymity and doesn't disclose where he works. Totally watertight argument.
I have zero faith in the written word in the GCC, it probably survives as a cheap alternative to toilet paper.
