Man jailed for a year for stealing QR200

A Criminal Court has sentenced a man to jail for one year after he was found guilty of breaking into a neighbour’s car to steal QR200, local Arabic daily Arrayah has reported.
The accused, who said he was drunk during the crime, admitted to the police that he broke the glass window of a neighbour’s car at night to steal the money, which was due to his need for money.
He also confessed that he had stolen from several other victims but only when he was inebriated.
According to the defence, the man should be acquitted or shown clemency as he was drunk and unaware of his actions during the crime, and that there was no evidence showing that he broke into the car or any witnesses that could link him to the incident.
The court rejected the defence’s argument and said the man’s confession was sufficient to convict him under Article 340 (1) of the Penal Law. However, due to the circumstances of the crime, the accused was shown clemency and sentenced to one year in jail under Article 92/1(3).
