
Labour force in cultural sector up 7 percent

The labour force in the cultural sector has increased annually by seven percent, according to the report ‘Cultural Statistics 2014 in Qatar.’
People working in visual arts and crafts, design and creative services, audio-visual and interactive media, cultural and natural heritage, performance and celebrations, sports and recreation, press, tourism and intangible cultural heritage are included in the report.
About 29,000 Qataris worked in the sector along with 94,000 non-Qataris between 2010 and 2012. The labour in the sector has increased to 122,000, according to the report.
Most Qataris — about 7,000 are employed in jobs related to ‘culture and natural heritage’ whereas about 30,000 non-Qataris are involved in ‘design and creative work.’
In 2010, about two-thirds of the labour force were between 25 and 44 years, and more than half of the employees were graduates.
Qataris are mostly in audio-visual and interactive media, constituting about 28 percent and non-Qataris in tourism-related work, with 39 percent.
Non-Qatari males constituted about two-thirds of the labour force.
In 2012, the average monthly salary was between QR18,000 and QR30,000.
The number of workers operating equipment and providing support services reached 25,000 in 2010 or two percent of the total labour force — 25 percent female and 75 percent male.
The number of Qatari support staff was 6,000 compared with 19,000 non-Qataris.
Qataris and non-Qataris were employed in jobs related to ‘audio-visual and interactive media’, constituting 90 percent of the total labour force in the field and 72 percent of them were male.
