HH The Emir urges Iran, Gulf countries to be good neighbors
HH The Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has called for good neighborly relations between Gulf countries and Iran in a telephone call with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Reuters reported.
The call came amid an ongoing war of words between regional rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran over the Hajj pilgrimage.
Tensions had been simmering between Gulf states and Iran following the storming of the Saudi embassy in Tehran, itself a response to the Saudi execution of a dissident cleric. In turn, the two countries failed to agree on arrangements to allow Iranian pilgrims to take part.
Qatar News Agency reported that HH The Emir telephoned Rouhani to offer greetings for the Eid Al Adha feast.
The country’s official news agency said HH The Emir “asserted that Gulf-Iranian relations must focus on the principles of good neighborly relations, mutual respect and the need to resolve any Gulf-Iranian differences through dialogue and negotiations.”
In reply, Tehran Times reported that the Iranian President spoke about the importance of settling differences through political dialogue.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran spares no effort to create and strengthen this procedure and all should make efforts in this area,” he is reported to have said.
