Gulf national jailed for robbing cab driver
A Gulf national has been sentenced, in absentia, to five years in jail for robbing a taxi driver, local Arabic daily Arrayah has reported.
A Doha Criminal Court has also imposed a fine of QR3,000 on him for carrying a weapon without any justification, the report adds.
According to the details of the case, a police patrol brought the accused to Al Rayyan police station after receiving information that a Nepalese taxi driver had allegedly been robbed of his wallet and assaulted by him and two others, the report explains.
The victim said the first accused boarded his taxi and asked him to take him to the Al Sailiya area. On the way, he asked the driver to stop the car at a certain place, where two other persons joined them.
Then, one of the three passengers ordered the driver to stop again and allegedly hit him several times while another man tied him up and took his wallet, according to the report.
While the first accused stayed back in the car until the police arrived, the other two fled. The driver said his wallet contained QR600, cards and some currency notes of Nepal and the Philippines.
The police found a knife on the first accused, who admitted that it was his and that he – and two others - had robbed the taxi driver. He, however, claimed that he did not know who the other two persons were, the report states.
The Public Prosecution told the court that the Gulf national and two unknown persons robbed the taxi driver. The first accused was also carrying a weapon without any justification and confessed to the court that he and the two others had committed the robbery, it adds.
The Criminal Court then sentenced the Gulf national – in absentia - to five years in jail and also decided to fine him.
Meanwhile, a medical examination showed that there were no signs of assault on the driver, the report states.

We know by whom MM. Someone has a word from one of the ministries saying they are not happy with Qatari court cases being published. No explicit threat is made but the newspapers know they better tow the line or they could expect trouble.
Why do you think the newspapers are reporting stories as Gulf Nationals, rather than Qatari. I guess they are testing the water again.

A good few years back the newspapers were told to stop reporting on Qatari crimes as it was making the country look bad. I used to enjoy reading those bits.

ah-ha! so as per Doha news - the accused is Qatari? interesting.... they don't want to mention it in Gulf times...
I have Qatari friends who just cannot understand why newspapers like The Guardian keep writing stories about how there are justice and human rights problems in Qatar, particularly when it comes to the treatment of Nepalis. How many more stories like this need to happen for something to change?

rip: yeah, most GCC countries seem to kowtow to some weird undercurrents in their mutual relations and would easier come down hard on their own nationals than take to task a non local GCC national; weird to me too, and I'm someone that defends Qatar through thick and thin lol and the GCC in general, Kuwait and Saudi excepting.
Looks like crime among Gulf Nationals is increasing, but in friendly Qatar not to worry, either don't turn up for the trial or just skip the country and have allah's mercy on you.
If you are brown and a bit Asian though, we will bang you up for years if you so much as look like you may commit a crime or we will take the word of two Qatari school kids that you insulted Islam and bang you up anyway without any proof.
Justice in the gulf is not justice, it is not blind.
'stayed back in the car until police arrived'.....that makes no sense at all; all three recent Arrayah news bits about Gulf nationals have been dicey and sketchy to say the least.....

indead the whols story also not making sense.. if he is cause then why the delinquent was sentensed in absentia... why did not he flee like others.. why the drive did not have any inhuries... too many unanswered questions

He hasn't paid 3000 to anyone. The court imposed the sentence and fine "in absentia" - which means he wasn't even there. This man has committed a crime and has received no punishment.
