Get ready for sunnier and windier days as mercury in Qatar rises to 47C
If you have been in Qatar the last few days, then you may have noticed the temperature climbing steadily.
Yesterday, the temperature in Qatar soared to a maximum of 47C and is extremely likely to hover around the mid-40C levels and beyond in the next few days, reported Gulf Times. The newspaper also reported that a maximum of 45C can be expected around the country today.
In addition to the heat, stronger windy conditions are also forecast and this could continue into the weekend, said the report.
Qatar’s Met department has advised people to be cautious and avoid the sea during this period. One should also not be directly exposed to sunlight.
The Met department has said that Northwesterly windy condition is expected to be especially severe on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with wind speeds expected to range between 18 to 30 knots, reported Qatar Tribune. Visibility at times may drop to below 2km, the report said.
Meanwhile, The Peninsula reported that the strength of the northwesterly windy conditions, locally known as Al Bawarih, weakens at night and temperatures become mild before regaining its strength again by sunrise on the next day.
Al Bawarih occurs as a result of the extension of the Indian Monsoon along with the presence of a high pressure system over northern Arabian Peninsula.
The onset of AlBawarih winds coincides with the onset of the Monsoon winds and the rainy season in the Indian subcontinent.
Al Bawarih in Arabic means the strong wind that raises dust. It's also called the "forty days wind" as it affects the region during the period between first of June until mid-July in a series of waves lasting several days and reaches its peak in the second half of June.
