Fifth British Festival in Qatar to feature 20 live events and a world record attempt
The fifth edition of the British Festival in Qatar, organised by the British Council in partnership with the British Embassy in Doha, will run from November 27 to December 12 at the Katara Cultural Village.
A number of great events are being planned as part of the programme. Qatar’s first-ever football-themed sonic art installation ‘105+dB’ as well as an attempt to build the world’s longest span bridge using Lego bricks are some of the highlights of the event, reported Gulf Times.
The ‘105+ decibels’ is a sonic artwork made uniquely for Qatar and will deal with identity, place and participation.
It will consist of a large-scale sound installation transplanting the awesome wall of noise and energy captured at The Grand Hamad Stadium to a new location at Souq Waqif, organisers said.
The art installation, created by UK-based interactive arts studio Invisible Flock, was designed using football’s mass appeal and the city’s canvas to encourage conversations ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Meanwhile, children and adults from all backgrounds are expected to come together at the Qatar National Library to attempt a Guinness World Record-breaking attempt, reported The Peninsula.
The activity, dubbed as ‘Qatar’s Little Builders: Bridging Communities,’ will be held at the Qatar National Library (QNL) beginning November 28.
First exhibited in 2016 at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in the UK, the 260,000-Lego brick bridge was designed by Dr Robin Sham, a fellow of ICE. It is an engineering wonder measuring more than 108ft (33M) long and weighing more than half a metric ton.
The festival will feature 20 live events including cultural and creative activities, panel discussions, sports and education events as well as business sessions, reported Qatar Tribune.
Katara General Manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti said the festival was aimed at celebrating ties between the UK and Qatar while building on the existing partnership in art and culture between the two countries.
The festival will also include events and projects in public art, film and music, UK alumni National Award, sports with opportunities to explore the historical links between the two nations.
More than 50,000 people are expected to attend the festival.
