Expat sentenced to 10 years in prison for smuggling drugs
A Doha criminal court has sentenced a Bangladeshi man to 10 years in jail and imposed a fine of QR200,000 for attempting to smuggle illicit drugs into the country through Hamad International Airport (HIA).
According to Gulf Times, local Arabic daily Arrayah reported yesterday that the court also ordered his deportation upon completing the jail term.
The defendant was arrested at HIA when a customs officer suspected him of carrying contraband. He ordered a search of his luggage.
Around 99 grams of heroin were found in his trousers pocket and around 4.7kg of marijuana in his luggage.
When confronted with the packets at the interrogation, he claimed that they belonged to someone in his home country who asked him to hand over them to a person whom he would meet at the airport.
The convict also claimed he did not know anything about their content and had no criminal record during his four years in Qatar.
However, the court convicted him based on the material evidences against him.
