Doha to have a taste of professional kite flying Friday

Come Friday and Doha will get a good taste of professional kite flying, thanks to a team from India which will perform at the Katara Cultural Village’s beach.
The event, which is scheduled to take place between 3pm and 6pm, is organized by the One India Kite Team, which is based out of the South Indian town of Kozhikode.
The six-member team, headed by professional kite flyer Abdulla Maliyekkal, said they will be using kites made by New Zealander Peter Linen, a professional kite maker, and costing about $4,000 each.
“We’ve taken our craft to different parts of the world and most recently, we were in Dubai as part of the UAE National Day celebrations,” Gulf Times quoted Abdulla Maliyekkal as saying.
The team has performed in many places including Pasir Gudan in Malaysia, 10 provinces in China, including Weifang, Wuhan, and Beijing and Indian destinations like New Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Udaipur and Ahmedabad.
Based on the response from the public, the team is hoping to hold a kite festival in Doha in April. The first step has already been taken, with Katara Cultural Village providing use of its beach free of charge.
“If weather conditions are good, we’ll be able to give a good demonstration,” he said.
The One India Kite Team consists of five other members — Riyas Nishad, Bilphin Rose Baby, Rathees Hashim, Sajid Thoppil and Shumaiz Shamseer.
