Central Municipal Council wants to speed-track reopening of private fuel stations
A number of private petrol stations that shut down in the last few years for repairs and improvements should complete work and reopen fast, members of the Central Municipal Council (CMC) have demanded.
Authorities had shut down several private petrol pumps in and around Doha for flouting safety rules set by Woqod and asked them to renovate and upgrade, reported Qatar Tribune.
CMC member Hamad bin Khaled Al Kubaisi recalled that two petrol stations near his residence had been shut down for more than eight years, causing great inconvenience to residents of the area.
“We demand a timeframe for the reopening of these petrol stations by their owners, otherwise their licences should be withdrawn,” Al Kubaisi said.
Other members were also critical about the abnormally long time owners were taking to renovate private petrol piumps.
It was observed that some of the older petrol stations had reopened as marketplaces, which often operates without proper licenses.
A demand was also raised to better monitor petrol stations that are hosting companies and car agencies, thereby causing inconvenience to motorists.
A few CMC members also expressed concern over commercial activities at some petrol stations. The lack of parking lots at petrol station is also a serious problem.
It led to demands being raised about limiting the number of restaurants and markets at petrol stations.
The recommendations have been referred to the Public Services and Utilities Committee of the Central Municipal Council for further discussion and action.
