Ashghal opens new 1km-long tunnel, from Gharrafat Al Rayyan to Doha, to traffic
Qatar’s Public Works Authority Ashghal has given finishing touches and opened a new 1km-long uni-directional tunnel at the Gharrafat Al Rayyan Interchange along Al Luqta Street.
The one-lane tunnel, which forms a part of Ashghal’s Khalifa Avenue project, will enable direct free-flow connectivity from Gharrafat Al Rayyan to Doha, reported Gulf Times.

The tunnel, which can accommodate up to 2,000 vehicles an hour, is expected to lower traffic congestion at the Gharrafat Al Rayyan Interchange. It will make things easier for motorists travelling from Gharrafat Al Rayyan to Doha, according to project engineer Abdulla Qasim.
Drivers will have a big benefit regarding travel times, with it expected to reduce by up to 30%, according to The Peninsula.

Ashghal had recently opened a 3km-stretch of the main carriageway, with four lanes in each direction, along Al Luqta Street running from west of Tilted Intersection until after Gharrfat Al Rayyan Interchange.
In addition to the main carriageway, around 3km of parallel service roads, with two lanes in each direction, were delivered providing efficient connectivity to Qatar Foundation, Sidra Medical and Research Centre and Qatar National Convention Centre, reported Qatar Tribune.
The project engineer, Abdulla Qasim advised that the tunnel will accommodate up to 2000 V/Hr and it will alleviate traffic congestion at Gharrafat Al Rayyan Interchange, for road users traveling from Gharrafat Al Rayyan to Doha with travel time reduction by up to 30% #Ashghal pic.twitter.com/gFuI3ZvkwW
Until now, Ashghal has completed 75% of construction works on the Dukhan Highway East project. It is scheduled to be completed by the third quarter of 2020. Once complete, the project will deliver around 11.6km of dual carriageway with four lanes in each direction.
