Alert customs officials at Hamad Port thwart an attempt to smuggle in prohibited items

Qatar has always maintained a sharp watch over its borders, often thwarting attempts by smugglers to bring in contraband items into the country.
This was once again the case recently when officers from the General Authority of Customs at the Hamad Port foiled an attempt to smuggle in chewing tobacco into Qatar, reported Gulf Times.
The contraband stuff was hidden inside a container filled with 600 packets of paper cups.
The crime came to light when an alert customs official noticed that there was a difference in the classification and packing of the parcels.
Closer inspection led to the discovery of 959 bags of chewing tobacco that was hidden under the paper cups, according to The Peninsula.
A report of the incident was immediately made, and the seized materials were sent to the concerned authorities.
Abdul Hadi Al Sahli, director of Maritime Customs Department, praised the efficiency of the customs officers and their dedication to working to preserve the security and stability of the country, according to Qatar Tribune.
He stressed that the seizures confirm the success of authority’s recent steps toward improving performance, including holding a training course.
