Lusail Stadium to host Real Madrid in the 2024 Intercontinental Cup final
Doha will host three matches of the revamped 2024 FIFA Intercontinental Cup — featuring standalone competitions between champions of six different continental federations.
The final, which will feature European champions Real Madrid as one of the teams, will be held at the iconic Lusail Stadium on December 18. Doha’s Stadium 974 will feature two games.
The first game in Doha will be the Derby of the Americas, on December 11, featuring Mexico’s 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup winners CF Pachuca and eventual 2024 CONMEBOL Libertadores Cup champions, who will be decided on November 30.
On December 14, UAE’s Al Ain or Egypt’s Al Ahly will face the winners of the ‘Derby of the Americas’ for the Challenger Cup in Doha. Also at stake is a place in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup Final against Real Madrid.
The new tournament, first announced in December 2023, will replace the annual Club World Cup, which will now be held every four years with the participation of 32 teams and starting in 2025.
The 2024 Intercontinental Cup kicked off on September 22 with the African-Asian-Pacific Cup Play-Off. In the contest, 2023-24 AFC Champions League winners Al Ain beat Auckland City, the 2024 OFC Champions League winners from New Zealand, 6-2.
Al Ain will next play 2023-24 CAF Champions League winners Al Ahly, from Egypt, on October 29 for the African-Asian-Pacific Cup.
