HH The Amir to begin two-day visit to India today

HH The Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani will head to the Indian capital of New Delhi on Monday, on a state visit, during which he will meet with President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He would be accorded a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan on February 18. Indian President Murmu will also host a banquet in Sheikh Tamim’s honour.
The visit will mark yet another pivotal moment in the deepening of ties between the two nations. The agenda during HH The Amir’s visit is expected to encompass deliberations on economic collaboration, defence cooperation, and energy security.
Sheikh Tamim will be accompanied by HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, and an official delegation.
Given Qatar’s influential role in West Asia and India’s growing global presence, this visit is anticipated to pave the way for collaborative efforts in regional stability and development.
“India and Qatar have deep-rooted historical ties of friendship, trust, and mutual respect. In recent years, the ties between the two countries — in the areas of trade, investment, energy, technology, culture, and people-to-people ties — have continued to strengthen,” India’s Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement while announcing HH The Amir’s visit.
The visit comes after a preparatory visit to Qatar by India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in December, 2024.
This will be HH The Amir’s second state visit to India, after 2015.
Qatar is the largest supplier of LNG to India, accounting for over 40% of India’s global LNG imports. India also imports ethylene, propylene, ammonia, urea, and polyethylene from Qatar.
Trade and investment form the cornerstone of India-Qatar relations. India’s bilateral trade with Qatar in 2023-24 stood at $14.08bn. India’s export to Qatar during the period was $1.7bn and India’s import from Qatar was $12.38bn.
