Children celebrate Garangao around Qatar in colourful fashion

On Friday, hundreds of children came together to celebrate Garangao in different parts of the country, marking the half-way point of the Holy month of Ramadan.
The Garangao celebration, an age-old tradition, is held every year on the 15th night of Ramadan, encouraging children to continue fasting throughout the holy month while rewarding them for their dedication.
The Celebrations Committee of the Private Engineering Office (PEO) hosted a festive Garangao Night at Souq Waqif’s eastern courtyard. Over 20 governmental entities and institutions participated, as did the Souq Waqif management and staff of the Embassy of Kuwait.
Thousands of families and children gathered for the event in traditional attire, happily chanting heritage songs to honour Qatar’s authentic traditions.
The participating organizations distributed Garangao bags filled with nuts and sweets to children and their families.
“Every year, Souq Waqif is keen to host such events to revive Qatari cultural heritage. This year, the unique diversity of participating entities and remarkable turnout from children and families surpassed our expectations,” Souq Waqif’s Director Mohammed Al Salem told Qatar News Agency.
“Over 30,000 gifts were distributed to children during the celebration as a recognition of their fasting during Ramadan and as an encouragement to continue fasting for the remainder of the holy month,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Cultural Village Foundation — Katara — celebrated Garangao Night on Katara’s Corniche and the open-air theatre. A huge crowd of children and adults took part in the celebrations.
Garangao bags filled with nuts and sweets were distributed, promoting authentic Qatari customs.
Elswehere, Qatar’s Ministry of Culture celebrated the evening on the sidelines of ‘Al Razji’ event at Darb Al Saai venue in Umm Salal.
“Garangao Night celebrations at Darb Al Saai, held as part of ‘Al-Razji’ event, underscores the Ministry’s commitment to preserving authentic Qatari heritage, which helps strengthen social ties,” said Ahmed Ali Al Yafei, Director of Public Relations and Communication at the Ministry of Culture.
“The ‘Al-Razji’ event and its various activities have attracted visitors of all ages, making Darb Al Saai a hub for Qatari culture and heritage. The activities cater to all age groups, and it provided a comprehensive experience for families,” he added.
‘Al-Razji’ competition, held daily at the Flag Plaza and hosted by media personality Iman Al Kaabi, gained significant momentum on Garangao Night. The competition’s themes included traditional attire and the customs of celebrating this night, as well as documenting the societal traditions observed during the festivities.
The Qatar Photography Centre, affiliated with the Ministry of Culture, organized a photography studio equipped with all necessary tools to document visitors’ celebrations of Garangao Night, within the center’s pavilion at ‘Al-Razji’ event at Darb Al Saai.
The ‘Al-Razji’ event, which has been extended until Saturday, offers a comprehensive cultural experience reflecting the spirit of the holy month of Ramadan through various activities, including Al Rumaila, Al Bidaa, the Children’s Plaza, and Garangao Night, along with numerous interactive programs and workshops.
