How to get a Kahramaa water and electricity connection in Qatar
The process used to be lengthy with lots of paperwork such as filling forms, getting rental agreements and even company details, all of which needed to be physically submitted. However, with the recent digitization of Kahramaa’s services, getting a connection is a lot easier and quicker.
Here is how you can get a Kahramaa connection.
- Gather the required documents. You’ll need a valid rental agreement, to begin with. The landlord will have to register this contract with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), who will then forward the tenant’s details. Once approved, both parties will receive an SMS. Obtain the landlord’s QID copy as well as yours.
- Download the Kahramaa app or log in to the website. You’ll need to create a user ID and register yourself. Kahramaa will send an activation number through an SMS to you. Key in the number to activate your account.
- Make a deposit of QR2000 using your credit/debit card. The deposit is refundable on cancellation or transfer of the connection. Upload the required documents and fill the form here. The application form also has all the details regarding tariffs and modes of payment.
- Kahramaa needs around 48 hours to take the water and electricity meter readings and then transfer the electricity connection under your name after all the outstanding has been cleared up by the previous owners.
Conserving water and electricity is increasingly important in the world we currently live in. Besides all the regular steps you can take like turning the electricity and appliances or switches off when not in use or ensuring you don’t leave the taps running, you can take additional steps to lower your electricity bills if they’re too high.
Switch off the air-conditioning when not required and don’t leave it running in unoccupied rooms. It is recommended to keep your thermostat to 22°C for maximum efficiency. Check and clean your air conditioner filters at least once per month. Avoid using water heaters in the summer and use energy-saving lamps or bulbs to light up your home.
If you’re still faced with high bills, you can visit any Kahramaa branch and open a complaint under the name High Consumption. Kahramaa will visit you and remove the meter to check the accuracy and ensure the meter readings are actually correct. You’ll get a complaint number to follow up as well.
You can direct any water and electricity-related inquiries to Kahramaa’s call center at 991, which is operational 24 hours a day.
