A real 'sponge out of water' experience!
DISCLAIMER: I’ve never watched Sponge Bob cartoons on the Nickelodeon Channel. After watching the movie, the chances of me ever doing that has gone down well below zero per cent.
Before taking my seat at Villaggio’s plush theatre, I watched the movie’s trailer. It looked somewhat promising. Now only if it translated into good cinema on screen…
Parts of the movie happen beneath the sea, in the cartoony land of Bikini Bottom. Sponge Bob works at the Krusty Krabb, and is an expert at making Krabby Patty using a secret formula. Plankton, owner of Chum Bucket, a rival restaurant, tries time and again to steal the formula.
However, a wicked pirate named Burger Beard (played in live action by Antonio Banderas) steals the formula and escapes to land.
And how Sponge Bob, Plankton and his rag-tag team of neighbors go above sea to retrieve the formula forms the rest of the story.
To be truthful, the 2D animation looks downright amateurish. The script is unfunny and is definitely stretched out.
After watching groundbreaking animation movies from Pixar and Walt Disney Studios, the Sponge Bob movie, brought out by Paramount Animation, is a huge let down.
I spent QR45 on the movie and never felt it was worth it. Unless you’re a hardcore Sponge Bob fan, neither will you.
VERDICT: Only for hard core Sponge Bob fans. Others avoid it NOW. Five out of ten stars.
