American Sniper — Dark and gritty!
Clint Eastwood, who has directed 37 movies so far, has a penchant for making hard hitting epics —Letters from Iwo Jima, Flags of Our Fathers and Invictus — just to name a few.
American Sniper is one of his most controversial to date and it has polarised opinions like no other recent movie has. It is understandable why.
The film is the story of late Chris Kyle, the most lethal and successful sniper in US history. It deals with his introduction and rise as an ace marksman, the guilt and the paranoia that goes along with the job and how he comes to terms with it.
There are some pretty strong scenes in it and it isn’t popcorn fare. Although made at an epic scale, one ultimately feels sadness about all this having to happen to the first place. One will shed a tear for the lives lost, and a world that will never be the same again.
The picture has been nominated for six Oscar awards and one shouldn’t be surprised if it wins most of them.
Verdict : Eight out of ten stars, for a gritty story and great production values.
