Peeing on Dead Bodies :(:(

The US military has said it is investigating a video that appears to show a group of Marines urinating on dead Taliban fighters.

The Marine Corps said the actions portrayed in the clip, which was posted online but has not yet been verified, were not consistent with its values.

The footage shows four men in military fatigues appearing to urinate on three apparently lifeless men.

A man's voice is heard saying: "Have a great day, buddy."

'Disgusting and immoral'

The men lying on the ground have brown skin, bare feet and are dressed in loose-fitting outfits. One appears to be covered in blood.

The origin of the video is not known, nor is it clear who posted it online.

The men in military fatigues seem aware that they are being filmed.

Pentagon spokesman Capt John Kirby said in a statement: "We are deeply troubled by the video.

"Whoever it is, and whatever the circumstances - which we know is under investigation - it is egregious behaviour and unacceptable for a member of the military."

Marine Corps headquarters at the Pentagon said in a statement: "The actions portrayed are not consistent with our core values and are not indicative of the character of the Marines in our Corps. This matter will be fully investigated.''

I was in Saudi at the time and that action was abhorrent. No one deserves to be treated in such a anger or to die in such a way. Having said that, what the marines did cannot and must not be condoned either.

Colonel Tim Collins in a speech to the British troops in Iraq rightly said "......I expect you to rock their world. Wipe them out if that is what they choose. But if you are ferocious in battle remember to be magnanimous in victory.....

If there are casualties of war then remember that when they woke up and got dressed in the morning they did not plan to die this day. Allow them dignity in death. Bury them properly and mark their graves."

This brings to light when i was in Saudi in 2004, when the terrorist shot and killed western plant manager, tired him to the rear of the vehicle and drove around until the body fell apart, not much was said about this,, but flock me have an American urinate on a dead terrorist and all hell breaks out,,, so one sided as always here in the middle east.

So according to the West (as indicated in sir_qofh's post above), the rest of the world needs to be taught lessons in freedom, democracy, human rights etc. Now that they have given African Americans the right to vote (by the way no longer than just over 50 years ago), they have become entitled tell us we should quit Islam because it supposedly has an unethical position on slavery. In fact nothing could be farther from the truth. Muslims were one of the first civilizations to turn actual slaves into rulers of Muslim provinces of the Islamic state. And science has allowed them to determine that because gays are born that genetically, Muslims are unethical in not allowing gay marriages and the right to spread the gay way of life.

In other words, according to the West, its my way or the highway (or rather being bombed to stone age) for the Muslims. By the way I wonder why despite the Americans' own history (and I must admit honourable history) of standing up to colonialism in the eighteenth century, they are so surprised that the afghans have also stood up for their country and their way of life?

So why pee on their dead especially when you can do no such thing when they are alive.

By Sal• 15 Jan 2012 09:08
Sal

sir_qofh - That is exactly my point that you make in your post.

Because you believe in the unassailable truth of Science (even if based on theories that we may or may not later find to be precisely how we first perceived them to be) and Capitalism (even if consumption-driven economies wreck havoc with the environment leading to climate change with devastating consequences for all), you think (and I quote from your post above) that Muslims are an unreasoned mass of humans who have been kept in the dark and have been prevented from advancing their minds through fear tactics.

Well that is exactly the problem of self superiority that the West in general, and Americans in particular suffer. And this is at the root of the conflict facing us today. In order to preserve and advance their social, economic and so called scientific way of life, the West extends its military machines and presence to every nook corner of every continent. Having nuked out two bustling cities in japan they go out and lecture everyone else on non proliferation and impose sanctions on that basis.

If the shunning of religion by the West was because of lifestyle and economics alone then I would be inclined to agree with you but I think you left out one prime reason why so many people are turning their backs in the West; evidence.

Science is accelerating at such a rate now that it is totally imploding all the myths and falsehoods that religion used to be used to fill in the gaps of.

The main sneer at science is that it 'does not have all the answers' but it is proving time and time again that it is turning the pile of things we don't know into a pile of things that we can explain.

Science in the West is eroding the cast-iron certainty of believing in the words written in a book thousands of years ago by scholars who had little or no view of the world, zero awareness of DNA and mental health, little morality on human rights and slavery and racism, the list goes on.

In a 'free-thinking' society, facts matter. They cannot be ignored if they make sense.

Against this is the attrition of Religion, not just Islam but they are the highlighted ones for being the most hard-line in a time of wavering belief.

They are a mass of humans who are un-reasoned with, a bunch who would say that even if you gave them ALL the scientific facts for the proof that there is no God (evidence which is not yet available) then they would STILL believe anyway.

That is at odds with the Western view. While many people would keep their faith in the above case, they would be wavered by science and not just follow blindly anymore.

Science is advancing the world, and is a beautiful and wonderful thing. Who doesn't get excited about finding out how we truly got here, how we truly exist?

The thing is, that truth erodes the foundation of religion, and the West gets attacked for advancing our knowledge by being accused of....women wearing skimpy clothes, adultery, loosening of morals, lack of self control.

That is a desperate argument though.

While they have a point that 'if that is advancement, then we want no part of it', they lump science in with that evil-living package and also fail to realise that many people in the WEST want a change in THEIR OWN societies.

Islam could understand that not all people in the West love the images stuffed into our eyeballs and the lack of clothes on our women or the faltering morals. The West just does not think Islam is the solution to curing that social ill, and Islam does.

Keeping your people in the dark and not advancing their minds is a fear tactic, and the same tactic used by the US against Islam; 'look, these people are trying to take your freedom of living how you want to live'.

The facts just don't point to there being a grand designer anymore, one person who made the world. It is not a sustainable story anymore. Evolution is a theory, but not a 'well this may be the way things happened' "theory", but a 'theory' in the other use of the word; "a scientific proven fact, a theory of factual explanation".

The West is doing itself no favours by slowly revealing this wonderful truth through Science....then having a broken, immoral society. Because then the facts get ignored and lost and lumped in as part of a blanket campaign against a debauched lifestyle that is easy for the outsider to say 'yuck, we don't want to live like YOU. Yes they may have science but look how they LIVE'.

Everyone wants to have the answers to life.

But it is one thing saying 'we haven't found out yet' and another thing keeping alive a story just to say that you do.

The differences between the Muslims and the West are not due to the differences between their religions.

The West has more or less given up on religion despite the fact that many Americans still go to church on Sundays. But practically religion has little influence on their collective lives; what drives decision making is primarily economic considerations.

The same trend is also prevalent in the Muslim world but the extent of it is less than in the rest of the world; Yes the Arab spring was driven by economics, but perhaps a majority of Muslims still want Islam to shape their social structures. This is why the Egyptians elected the Muslim brotherhood.

Christianity and Islam are not so different from each other in that we share reverence for almost all of the Prophets and the original ideas were the same; in fact both religions claim to have their origins in the faith that was revealed to Prophet Ibrahim or Abraham (peace be upon him). So while the Christians and Muslims share a lot as far as faith goes, we have to understand that the present day Christians and the present day Muslims are diametrically opposed to each other in where they want to go. Muslims, despite trends to the contrary, still want Allah's will and commandments to determine and shape their social lives, the present day Christians want nothing of God at the State level.

Muslims, despite wanting the worldly benefits, are not prepared to give up on God; to them Islam is not just a set of rituals or just a religion per se, but a complete way of life. Today most Westerners will have none of that; they want to keep God limited to privacy almost secrecy (its not appropriate to ask people about their religion or have fervent discussions on matters of faith).

So our differences are not about our faiths, but about how much of it we should have in our lives.

With time, more and more people in all countries (including Muslim countries) are aiming for implementing nationals policies based on acquisition and accumulation of wealth; but some still want God in their lives and beyond just weekly worship as a private act. Many muslims believe that it is not Islam to just pray and fast; to such muslims we cant really be Islamic until and unless we shape our societies and according to Allah's commands.

With time, more and more Muslims will endorse the Western way of life where religion finds little place outside the home and mosque. On the other hand, we also see other Muslims becoming more religious. (it is this grouping that is currently tearing up Muslims societies in countries like mine). I think if Christians were also becoming more religious, the conflict between the two civilizations would be less intense. Its the conflict over place of religion in society that makes the differences so severe, because it is this difference that makes our outlooks so diametrically opposed.

What to you all think?

What these soldiers did was deplorable and totally wrong. They should and must be held accountable.

As for root causes - I'm sure the Marine Corps will look into it and take steps to stop it from happening.

As someone who has served in the forces, my personal opinion is that young soldiers are thrust into action too early (especially where reservists are used). Also, those caught must be made examples of to ensure that others realise that this is not the done thing.

Lastly, as in other similar cases, politics and expediency sometimes give way to justice.

By sir_qofh• 12 Jan 2012 21:19
sir_qofh

This did not happen in City Centre Mall. This did not happen in a Graveyard, where they dug up a body. This happened in a war-zone.

If you saw this happen on the Corniche, it would be the most horrific thing you had ever seen. To these guys? Peeing on the body of a person they have been (rightly or wrongly) trained to believe as the enemy and the evil that attacks their country, and stripping their dignity (which is what happened when they first joined the armed forces, to break them) is 1/100th of the kind of evil things they have seen in a war-zone.

This does not justify it. It does not make it okay. It is just putting the act into its proper context, not 'downplaying' it.

Your scale of moral compass of things you would do to others is, oh I don't know, say you call someone a bad name, that is a '1'. '5' is you stealing. '10' is you spreading malicious damaging rumours about someone, or maybe something more severe.

For these guys, a '10' is PUTTING A BULLET INTO A PERSON'S BRAIN. And that is not a hypothetical 'would you?' for them, it is a routine.

When you have 'killing' as your '10' of evil that you will commit, how far down the scale do you think pi**ing on the enemy is to them?

How a racist comment, whatever the motive, aids that discussion is highly questionable.

That book sounds, on the face of it, vile. That said I am not sure too many of the other side are going around and (idiotically) glorifying acts that they committed that were surely as horrific.

Either way, 'slit white throats' is not a justifiable or constructive comment at all. If that is what he truly thinks it should be kept to himself.

Agreed.

Though I would counter that America, the dominating force, has no completely gotten over it's religiosity, because Politics there is still dominated by Christianity and an Atheist would very likely not get elected as President.

The Moral code that has been agreed upon in the modern world has very little to do with Religion, we all agree that slavery should be abolished, all accept the emancipation of women, and all agree that human rights regarding colour and gender and sexual preference is wrong, and all of those stances arose from thought-out discussion of right and wrong, not from religious scripture.

Both sides are showing total hypocrisy.

By Sal• 12 Jan 2012 14:17
Sal

The West, having been through the religious experience and having shed it from public life, wants mostly everyone else to follow suit. The Muslims want to keep God in everything. That is the rift.

Ideally each side should let the other be as they would be. If the West wants to promote their ideas they should do so without forcing them onto others. Similarly if Muslims believe their way of life is superior, they should demonstrate that by implementing their religious principles in the society and show to everyone how that makes for a better society and wards off some of the decadence of the West that they frown at.

But neither side is doing the ideal.

The West is lecturing the East about how their women should live and how they should allow for gay rights. Then the West is forcing itself on the Muslims by first ridding them of their WMDs (iraq) but after finding no WMDs justifying it by saying it was really about removing saddam and bringing in democracy.

Similarly some Muslims like the Afghans are reacting violently after feeling cornered by the worldly success of the Western way of life and having borne the brunt of the force of the West's military might.

So regardless of which side you think is correct and you hope should win, the fact of the matter is: the clash is on.

Which is interesting, because you would think the 'correct' way of life would be the one that causes the least human suffering.

The gears behind the mechanism of morality are that whatever you do reduces the amount human suffering, mentally and physically, and that by being 'moral' you are ceasing to persecute, punish or harm without motivation.

The way of life that should 'win' is the one that causes the least human suffering and mental anguish in times of peace.

If the two sides could get past seeing it as a war of religion, and instead see it as a war of how to live and leave the issue of god out of it, more discussion and less fighting could be achieved.

By Sal• 12 Jan 2012 13:45
Sal

In case no one noticed, Sam Huttington's clash of civilisation theory is already playing itself out. It is not a competition of how many throats each side can slit (thats just collateral effect), this war is all about way of life. Each side feels that its way of life is at threat by the actions of the other.

In an ideal world, they would promote their ideas peacefully; but this is far from an ideal world that we are living in.

Millions of lives of people that, for all intents and purposes, are already dead.

They don't care what happens to them here on earth, they have their eyes on 'paradise'.

The innocent victims aside, would you rather they were shot there, or that they came to your country and blew up a part of it and your citizens?

Because either way, THEY want to die.

By anonymous• 12 Jan 2012 13:31

give a f**k by taking millions of lives, so who is the real terrorist

That is why we will lose the war against terror.

We still hold onto our moral scruples, whereas the Taliban don't give a f**k what you think or feel.

....make me laugh.

These Taliban fighters would kill your family, take your civil liberties, your freedom, your human rights, the life of everyone you know and love and adore and cherish in one big flash of a suicide bomb without ANY remorse, and would be PROUD to take your life away from you for a 'higher cause', and you are whimpering about someone peeing on their dead body?!?!

but I agree with sir _qofh. War and everything that goes with it can bring out the worst in many. And as much as it disgusts us and fills us with horror to read such stories know that the reality of any war can often be even more uglier than this. And knowing that in a world where even non military so called civilians can murder, oppress and torture others without any remorse and thought then what these men did to dead bodies shouldn't be shocking.

That said I hope these men, and others like them from ANY side, will be duly penalized for any laws they may have violated by such actions.

Such a wasted effort, they should have cut off their heads and hands to set things right in their perceived afterlife. Maybe then they will be less likely to pursue the romantic martyr title, at least they weren't deprived of that.

TimeBandit: Other people kill civilians and commits genocide but atleast these countries admit when they are wrong. Germany has apologised to the Jews for the Holocaust and compensated them. America on the otherhand doesn't want to admit it's crimes and continues killing innocent people. That's what's up!

I do agree it is a disgrace to humanity, but despise all you armchair critics for looking down your noses.

These are soldiers at war, they kill people, and have to live with that.

Their moral compass is skewed compared to someone sitting in an office in Qatar.

I am not excusing their actions in any way. Just saying that to think that these young men, in a warzone, are in possession of any real world emotional base is a silly thing to say.

As I said, they are trained to put a bullet in someone's forehead with no remorse. How can you be surprised that they desecrate a dead body?

The only people who benefit from war are arms dealers. War drives people crazy. Just look at the history of all wars it involves mutilation, rape, starvation and etc. Then poverty lies ahead from dysfunctional families dealing with mental illness and handicap soldiers. If you look at the root of the problem it's difficult for parents to admit to their mistake of not providing enough MONEY so their kids could get a GOOD COLLEGE EDUCATION AND GO FORWARD! People become soldiers to get paid and they have no where else to go at a young age without financial support and direction. Seldom people volunteer for this job. So it's time to think about the past, present, and what lies ahead of us for the future. But, don't dwell on the past.

Now what I wonder what do the Taliban do to the American dead? We will never know because they don't video themselves doing it and publish it on YouTube. However I remember from the Russian invasion times, stories of them cutting of the legs and arms of Russians (while they were still alive) that they have captured, and then leaving them barely alive (about to die in fact) in locations to be found by their fellow countrymen. Peeing on dead bodies does not even register in my mind as a war atrocity, compared to what is going on out there.
