What you need to know about Cupping/Hijama in Qatar
Cupping has become increasingly popular recently, and while a lot of people are daring to do it as a trend, it is laden with health benefits.
Cupping is rather ancient and while the Chinese have been doing it for centuries, it is not uncommon in the Islamic world and is known as Hijama. Hijama is derived from the Arabic word Al Hajm which means suction.
It is done by placing cups on your skin that create suction, removing all the bad blood and toxins. Cups are usually made of glass, but also made from bamboo, earthenware and silicone.
The cup creates a vacuum that pulls your blood and reddens your skin, left on for roughly three minutes. It can be done on any part of the body where there are no nerves or veins present. Cupping on the upper back is the most common.
Does it hurt? A QLer recently experienced cupping therapy at Abu Tayba Cupping Center and told us that there was no pain whatsoever. The only side effects felt were extreme weakness and loss of energy.
The health benefits of cupping are massive. The suction and negative pressure provided by cupping can loosen muscles, encourage blood flow, and sedate the nervous system (which makes it an excellent treatment for high blood pressure).
Cupping is used to relieve back and neck pains, stiff muscles, anxiety, fatigue, migraines, rheumatism, and even cellulite.
Here are a few things to keep in mind before and after doing it.
Before
- Make sure you're relaxed and haven't performed any strenuous activities for a few hours.
- Shower at least an hour before cupping.
- If you're diabetic, ensure your sugar levels are controlled before you start. Insulin should not be taking immediately before cupping.
- Do not eat at least four hours before cupping, especially fatty foods.
After
- Do not donate blood at least for a week.
- Do not smoke immediately after.
- Avoid meat for a few hours.
- Do not perform cupping again for a week.
- Avoid partaking in sports, or any strenuous activity, including driving for very long distances.
If you are pregnant, sick, donated blood recently, had surgery recently or on any specific medications, cupping is not advisable.
Make sure you get a consultation done, before your session to clear any doubts you may have. The cupping centre in Al Rayyan on Al Luqta Street has a lot of information listed out, so you can read well in advance.

Cupping or hijama is good for the body in general. But is should be taken with care. I had a bad experience with Abu Tayba Cupping Center situated in Al Rayyan Luqta street last month. I had a lower back pain and complained to the medical staff about it. I told them I have been told it was a small disc slip. They put two cups at my lower back and I could feel the suction. Two days after the treatment, I was suffering from immense pain and especially down my leg. I went to the emergency hospital, they gave me a dose of vaccination and referred to an orthopaedic wherein I could expect a phone call in few days or weeks. Even two days after the vaccination and medication of pain killers , there was no improvement. I couldn't sleep and keep my legs flat on the ground for the next 2 days . I immediately took an emergency leave to my home country and got diagnosed. I suffered from disc extrusion impinginging on the nerve roots of the spinal canal which was causing immense pain to my legs. I had to go undergo surgery on 1st April 2017. What I feel intensified was the suction from the cups which forced the already degenerated disc to come outwards. Sorry to say bad experience. Most of the staffs in the center are only arabic speaking and don't have qualified english speaking practitioners. Moreover this is the only Hijama Center I know in Qatar and the service charges are extremely high. I wish there could be more hijama centers in Qatar foucing on the expat community as well.
This is just a fad. No real health benefits.
I prefer using my hands for cupping. It's free.

"The health benefits of cupping are massive."
There are ZERO health benefits from cupping. Not a single reputable scientific study has proven any benift. In fact it can be dangerous "Cupping can be dangerous, particularly if combined with bloodletting, a practice where small cuts are made in the skin before suction cups are attached. Usually only small amounts of bleeding occur and practitioners say it helps rid the body of toxins. If blades are reused or not sterilized properly, patients are at risk of blood-borne diseases such as hepatitis and HIV." Qatar Living please do research before recommending procedures claiming "Massive Health Benifts." That are completely false. It's a fad nothing more.
Wt: Except that it doesn't and you won't...
Hijaamah comes from the root al-hajm, which means “sucking”, and is used of the action of draining the breast when an infant is suckled. Al-hajjaam is the name given to the cupper, and hijaamah is the name given to this profession. Al-mihjam is the name given to the tool in which blood is collected, or to the knife used by the cupper.
Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Healing is to be found in three things: drinking honey, the knife of the cupper, and cauterization of fire.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 10/136).
According to a hadeeth narrated by Jaabir (may Allaah be pleased with him), the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If there is any good in your medical treatments, it is in the knife of the cupper, drinking honey, or cauterization with fire, as appropriate to the cause of the illness, but I would not like to be cauterized.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 10/139)
According to a hadeeth narrated by Anas ibn Maalik, may Allaah be pleased with him, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “I did not pass by any group on the night when I was taken on the Night Journey (Isra’), but they said to me, ‘O Muhammad, tell your ummah to do cupping.’” (Reported by Ibn Maajah; it has corroborating evidence which strengthens it).
Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was treated with cupping, and he paid the cupper his fee.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 10/124; Muslim 1202).
Anas ibn Maalik (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allaah was treated with cupping by Abu Tayyibah. He commanded that he should be given two measures of food, and he spoke with his tax-collectors, who reduced his taxes. He said, “The best treatment you can use is cupping.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 10/126; Muslim, 1577)
If it "sucks" blood through the skin you will have a lot of wounds.
