How long can the coronavirus survive on different surfaces?

The novel coronavirus, officially known as COVID-19, has been making headlines since it first emerged in December 2019.

While we know that the virus is most likely to spread from person-to-person through close contact and respiratory droplets from coughs and sneezes, another important factor to keep in mind is possible transmission through surfaces.

Research reveals that coronaviruses can last on certain surfaces, such as tables and door handles, and other materials from anywhere between two hours to nine days.

According to a recent study by the National Institute of Health in Maryland, USA, the new virus can possibly live on surfaces like plastic and stainless steel for up to 72 hours (3 days).

In another study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, it was found that the virus might survive on copper for four hours and on cardboard for up to a day.

In terms, of glass, studies indicate that the virus may last on glass surfaces including the screens of your mobile phone, tablets, and other devices for up to nine days.

This information may seem a bit overwhelming, but the important thing to remember is to regularly disinfect “hi-touch” surfaces.

Here are some ways you may want to follow to keep your phones clean and safe against the virus.

Of course, the top most important measure is to ensure you wash your hands regularly, through out the day, for at least 20 seconds and refrain from touching your eyes, mouth and nose. But, in addition to these measures, keep some disinfectant wipes handy to wipe surfaces you think may pose a risk.

Be sure to follow the recommendations given out by the health authorities in Qatar as they continue to implement the highest level of monitoring, detection, and management procedures to fight the virus.

In addition to implementing safety measures, the country also makes sure outdoor public spaces are also sterilized and disinfected regularly to keep the risk of the virus spread to an absolute minimum.

For any queries, or concerns related to COVID-19 in Qatar, the public can contact a 24/7 hotline set up by the Ministry. The hotline number is 16000 and is toll-free.

Here's everything you need to know about the virus, including ways to protect yourself.
