HMC surgeons perform 12 kidney and liver transplant surgeries in 10 days

Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) transplant and organ donation teams performed 10 kidney transplants and two liver transplants over a 10-day period this month.
Seven of the 10 kidney transplants were of Qatari patients and of these three were recipients of donations from their relatives. The two liver transplants were from deceased donors, HMC mentioned in a press release.
Her Excellency the Minister of Public Health Dr Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari met with some of the patients who had received the donor organs last week. She praised the efforts of the teams involved in the life-saving procedures.
“Qatar’s organ donation and transplantation programs are unique - we have a single, unified waiting list as well as exemplary care and ongoing support for donors and their families. Many countries around the world seek to emulate our model of care,” HE Al Kuwari said.
“Qatar’s national strategy for organ donation and transplantation is not only world-leading in terms of the clinical and ethical standards it applies, but Qatar also has the depth of clinical expertise and facilities to perform these procedures and provide safe and effective follow-up care for transplant patients,” she added.

Medical director of Hamad General Hospital, and Director, Qatar Center for Organ Transplantation (QCOT), Dr Yousuf Al Maslamani commented, “Since the start of our transplant program in 1986, we have worked tirelessly and strengthened the exceptional care we provide to our patients.
“We have in place a multidisciplinary team with some leading international experts that enabled us to deliver the highest levels of care to our patients who need these procedures.”
HMC’s Chief Medical Officer Dr Abdulla Al Ansari said the organ transplant program offers an excellent standard of care and positive outcomes.
“The increase of our transplant activities came as a result of the tremendous increase of living and deceased donation, and the growing trust of the community in the safety and world class outcomes of our transplant surgeries,” Dr. Al Ansari said.
He underlined that even during the COVID-19 pandemic HMC created a special track for these essential surgeries.
