rent and family

Hi there,
Is there anything vital I need to know about renting in Doha? My family and I will be moving in the near future and just wondering if there are loopholes or hidden costs that I need to look out for? Is it best to go through a estate agent or go by word of mouth. Most families (we have three small boys under 4 years..good grief) seem to live in compounds so is that the best thing to do? What do I look for in a viila or is the rent crisis so bad that I just grab what I can? Any advice on this would really be appreciated, thanks in advance.
cheers

Does your contract not include housing as rent is very expensive. As for the compound vs stand alone debate we have lived in both. The advantage of a decent compound is the shared facilities such as swimming pool and tennis court and the social aspects. However with the social aspects come the constant stream of kids knocking on your door to play, sometimes at all hours of the evening! We are currently in a stand alone villa and love it. We have two kids, 12 and 10 but really like our privacy and the lack of distraction when homework is getting done. Security is not an issue with stand alone villas, some compounds have very elaborate security to get in and out of, not really sure why?? Generally this is a very safe place to live.
