Have you seen the new add in the classifieds for Breastfeeding classes? This has never been offered in Qatar before and I think it wil be of great value for many expectant mums, inshallah!

The biggest problem of breastfeeding is ... the father wants to drink from the same bottle.... lol

brit, no, not for all.

Silly question, but Isn't breastfeeding a natural instinct for a mother ?

By drmana• 11 Oct 2010 13:27
drmana

Nomerci, sure :-)

By nomerci• 11 Oct 2010 13:26

And as you said before...don't be a good patient...if you have questions, ask! :)

By nomerci• 11 Oct 2010 13:25

drmana, I am not a doctor, so naturally you have more info on this. Thank you for explaining it.

I suppose a non medic like me kind of goes with what we feel...hence some people take precautions.

By drmana• 11 Oct 2010 13:19

nomerci, normal body temperature is 37 degree Celsius or 98.6 degree Fahrenheit, right? How much will sitting close to stove raise it? 38 degrees? 39 degree? If so, every cook should be having fever every time they come out of kitchen.

And even if lets say, its increased to 38 degree Celsius, will it cause over heating in newborn baby? Definitely not.

Believe me, breast milk temperature is not so susceptible to change in normal kitchen. If kitchen is too hot, mother's body thermostat will control any rise in body temperature via sweating or similar means unless as I said in condition of heat stress/stroke.

Our feeling hot doesn't mean our body temperature is raised. Body has an intact thermostat to check that.

By nomerci• 11 Oct 2010 13:07
nomerci

Well, no, we do not. But we are not small babies, where a few degrees can make an impact.

And I wish those classes all the best too....great initiative!

By drmana• 11 Oct 2010 12:59
drmana

nomerci, we don't get overheated by hot drinks and soups...do we?

Whatever, everyone has right to believe what they want till it doesn't hurt anyone.

I wish the breastfeeding classes all the success.

By lawa• 11 Oct 2010 12:57
lawa

of the doc now a days they don't believe on old methods but after some time when researcher prove that then they accept it happily

By nomerci• 11 Oct 2010 12:54
nomerci

Actually, I too think lawa has a point. I am pretty sure that the body temperature does increase during cooking...as a matter of fact, mine does! Not tremendously, but still. and therefore the milk of a breastfeeding mother would be warmer at that point. Now, is this bad for the baby? I do not know...but if one were in a tropical, non airconditioned environment, there may be a chance of overheating for the baby.

By lawa• 11 Oct 2010 12:54
lawa

our normal body can have little warm which is good for baby but extra is not good

By drmana• 11 Oct 2010 12:48
drmana

jack, our body knows how to maintain temperature unless its the case of heat stroke. And that transfer of temperature through milk is pure nonsense.

baby boil milk ;-)

By drmana• 11 Oct 2010 12:47
drmana

hahahahaha....that is insane. Lawa, apart from being a doc, I am a mother too. I breastfed my baby for 15 months. Please as I said before, don't spread those old wives tales specially to the new mothers. There is no truth in that.

By anonymous• 11 Oct 2010 12:46
anonymous

I think Lawa got a point here.... I think he is talking about rural areas where the women are in very hot kitchen... here all the kitchens have AC.

But then Lawa hot/warm milk is better than cold milk (if the mother is in AC room)... no?

By lawa• 11 Oct 2010 12:44
lawa

i can explain you like this try stand near stove about 20 to 30 minutes and then check your bp then you will have extra body heat now when your baby got breastfeed at that check your baby head will also gets hot and may be some sweating also it means that heat going through your milk to baby.

By drmana• 11 Oct 2010 12:37
drmana

Lawa, that stove thing still doesn't make sense.

By lawa• 11 Oct 2010 12:21
lawa

i think you both don't understand me women are usually getting deficiency of hemoglobin in blood after birth and some time mother don't care for this thing and they use to work in the kitchen in their early days and same time they are feeding their kids which cause their kids also deficiency in their blood due to not taking medicine and also working near stove which increase their body heat also and it is true that i am a male but knowledge can be with anyone. It means that they should give five to six minutes to cool themselves and then they can feed.

True tinker....newborns miss out on benefits of breast milk due to these myths.

By snessy• 11 Oct 2010 11:36
snessy

Lawa...unless you have boobs or are a doctor, you're not allowed an opinion on this matter, LOL ;-)

Drmana...that's so sad, I think I'll head back home when I decide to have another baby.

By gudone• 11 Oct 2010 11:34

2 months b4, my cousin (back home country) fell asleep while feeding & the baby girl died (was just 3 months old).. these classes r very compulsory everywhere...

By drmana• 11 Oct 2010 11:33
drmana

lawa, let me know when you get any credible source for that. That is utter nonsense.

Snessy, now you get my point :-(

By anonymous• 11 Oct 2010 11:32

My daughter is still taking feed from me and touchwood she never got any problems so far...

By drmana• 11 Oct 2010 11:31

snessy, you can only dream of such health visitor services here and in our part of the world........unfortunately, New parents totally have to rely on their parents or other elder females in the family here for any practical knowledge regarding parenthood.

By snessy• 11 Oct 2010 11:31
snessy

Reading some of myths above, I think it's a better idea for lessons now ;-)

By lawa• 11 Oct 2010 11:30
lawa

when ladies are cooking in front of stove their body heat gets increased and due to the weep of baby they use to feed them as quickly as can possible which really transfer the heat in to the milk and some time due to that baby gets sweating.

By drmana• 11 Oct 2010 11:28
drmana

Lucy, not true....

By snessy• 11 Oct 2010 11:27
snessy

Perhaps it works differently here. In the UK we have Health Visitors visiting you at home on a weekly basis for the first 6 weeks and they help you with everything you mentioned above Drmana. Then you can join a support group and discuss with other mums going through the same thing. Either way, this is fantastic...I breastfed my son for 16 months (and trust me there were days I wanted to give up) but I would do it all over again....

By anonymous• 11 Oct 2010 11:27

I have heard it last year only that after working in kitchen you shoul dnot feed your baby immediately becoz body temperature changes a lot...

get your bum outta here... pronto!!!

Because being born into a joint family of marathi origin we knew all.But here maybe being a nuclear family so many women need these kind of classes.Otherwise Women already know so much about it.It only requires how to hold the nipple a bit away from baby's mouth so that it will not block baby's nose,to clean it properly after giving every feed,to apply some good nipple care cream from a good company for cracked nipples and last and most important how to burp a baby after giving breastfeed.

Moreover due to new so many of us become member of parentcenter.com or babycenter.com or welcomebaby.com.

By drmana• 11 Oct 2010 11:24

Lawa, now that is so absurd. Totally rubbish. Taking plenty of fluids is fine but what about this stove thing???

By lawa• 11 Oct 2010 11:21
lawa

but it needs to educate the mother that she should know that how to feed and what care they should do like so many mothers don't know that when they are feeding their kids they should take some water or some juice first which help them and some time they just came out of kitchen and try to feed the kids which is also not good bcz she was standing in front of stove which increases her body heat

What is crap TheLucyShow? Breastfeeding?

By drmana• 11 Oct 2010 11:18

snessy, have seen many who do need lesson. Many problems like not knowing how to make baby latch to breast properly, taking care of nipples during breastfeeding, measures to take during breast engorgement or cracked nipple etc. Hence, hope this will help those.

By anonymous• 11 Oct 2010 11:15

All crap....

By snessy• 11 Oct 2010 11:15

It's not really lessons you need, but more of a support group. A chance for mothers to get together and just chat about breastfeeding. It can be very difficult to keep breastfeeding and having other mothers share their experiences makes you feel better knowing you're not the only one going through it. Breastfeeding should be enjoyable but unfortunately for some it can be very stressful.

lawa...the only way a baby can die is if he/she suffocates with their mother's weight, which would only happen if you fall asleep whilst breastfeeding.

By drmana• 11 Oct 2010 11:13
drmana

Many new mothers struggle to breast feed their baby correctly causing them to abandon it for commercial products. This is surely going to help many if properly promoted.

By lawa• 11 Oct 2010 11:10
lawa

good thing bcz many ladies don't know how to feed their kids.you might be not aware of this thing that many kids died during feeding just bcz of mothers had not idea how to feed them.
