I'm sure your reply is for the mum with the toddler hitting the terrible two phase ;)

By Elegance• 29 Mar 2010 19:16
Elegance

The reason might be her "terrible two" stage and you being engaged with a lot of other issues like change of country, etc. Make sure she is well fed and pampered a little extra when the family is stressed. They easily sense the change and start being insecure.

And while keeping on shifting your abode might be exciting for you, the child can find it stressful. All the best!

Hi all

Right now Im paying $450 and I think it's not bad! in US or UK we can't have a maid paying this salary...

for me maids are not slave or servant, I belive they are my baby 2cd mum someone who is living with you every day and night, how can we do something bad to the person is spending more time with our baby when we are at work.

My maid is special for us, we went to Sri lanka for holidays, we went to visited to many places the 2cd week we went to Candy were she is from and they family given to us the most incredible attention.

and we just was surprised the way how they live, very humble but the three days we spend with they, we just saw happy faces.

I pay according to experience, competence and professionalism rather than nationality.

Why here I remember that infamous cartoon of GT's about maids. Sometimes such things can happen if you pay according to nationality...

Everything's gonna be alright!!!

... people seem to not realize that when they take somebody on and this person lives with them, this person becomes part of not only your household but also your family. You trust them with your lifes and belongings, and most important with your children. That comes at a price, and the price I mentioned is VERY fair!

I agree with you Alumnar. You cannot treat someone like a slave... If you want a job doing right you have to pay and look after them properly.....

But I also think that paying ANY maid, no matter what her nationality, below $400 a month is exploitation. They need to live, feed and care for their families at home and save to be able to return home one day. Is that not the reason why there are expats? For the same kind of living, no savings, no human treatment they might as well stay at home.

Alumnar, you seem to assume that all maids are Philippinas. Most come from countries with a lower expectation of salary.

You do know that salaries here depend on nationality, right?

By Alumnar• 27 Mar 2010 21:18

If you check the contracts from the Philippino Embassy you will know it is true. A live-out part-time will cost you 30-35 Riyals per hour (as she will pay for her own transport) and the rest of the costs are up to her, so no other responsibility for the boss except for the hourly rate.

400$ is a bit too much. If you add to this 400$ maid's accommodation, let's say a room 3500QAR (1000$), then her food about $200, then her cloths, etc, about another $100-200.. ops..it comes to over QAR6000... than it turns that the office clerk makes less then maid?...

... and that is not slavery??? Check out the contracts for housemaids with the Philippino Embassy - none goes through unless the pay is 400 USD!

Johanna, you can join our Mums in Doha Coffee Mornings and join our Group here on QL. We will help you with any information you need :) (Thanks Mandilulur).

There are Hotels here where you can do Kitesurfing, good (and very expensive) dentists, very good pediatricians (I can recommend you one when you arrive) and you might have to be on a waitlist for a while for nurseries but you will soon have a place for your child(ren).

People don't get paid what they deserve they get paid what they negotiate. It may not be fair but it's the truth
