To move or not to move

Hello, we are trying to decide whether we make the move to Doha or not.
We have two boys 15 and 13, and we currently live in Abu Dhabi. Our biggest concern is that our eldest is about to start his GCSE's in Sept, so making the decision is that much harder! Not only are we worried about the availability of places in Secondary schools but also choosing one that would match the std of school they are in at the moment.

I am so scared to muck around with moving them at this stage of their education! It is so much easier moving with smaller kids knowing that they will be fine, but at this stage it makes our decision harder to make.

Would appreciate any words of wisdom from thoes of you in the know.

We also moved in from AUH to DOH 9 months ago, after spending 5 years in AUH. The descision should be based on what you want from the move.

If you compare Doha to Abudhabi, there is no comparision at all. AUH is far superior as a city, with much more greenery and walking space. Walking and fresh air is very difficult to get in Doha. You are either in office, mall, home or car.

School wise also AUH is at a better position, the quality and availability wise. Shifting the kids are a problem but not the biggest one, as they are very fast to adjust. Only thing is you have to convince them and mentally prepare them from atleast three to four months before.

The worst affected will be your wife, if she is not a working wife. She will have nothing to do after the kids leave for school at 630 am. She is going to suffer the most. The kids and the father will be spending most part of the day at school or office, so house wife/ working wife, big issue. She is the most important factor.

So the decesion should be based on the job(quality of the Company, the money, the future prospect and the career). Hence in my opinion if the job offer is very very good so that all the negative aspects can be overlooked then only you should take a move. Sacrifice your wife and kids for Job/money?? the descision is yours....

I'm afraid you are already too late to get placement at many, if not all, the good schools.

Not wise and practical to uproot the kids just because your hubby got a great job offer here.

Or you come for a visit and check it yourself. You're the mother, you and your hubby should decide what is best for your kids...

The waiting lists for good schools here are horrendous. Call hem first on your chances o getting your kids in and then decide.

We also moved from AD to Doha years ago and we still regret it. Doha is small place and rather boring (especially for the kids). Social life is much more developed in AD and infrastructure is much better.

Yes, lots of projects are announced in local newspapers in Doha but nothing happens... The new airport should have opened in 2008 and is still not finished. Traffic is pure horror with aggressive local drivers... Stay in AD for another 2-3 years and then reassess.

Quality schools in Doha are like hens' teeth and they have very long waiting lists. Any school that you would easily get into would be of a p*ss poor standard compared to SA or AD.
