indian schools not upto mark- doha- qatar

I am one of the parent and my wards are studying in Birla Public school. For the past few years, i have noticed that school is just adding to its numbers like now crossed 3000. no quality only quanitity. there are various no's. 1) quality of teachers not upto mark, most of them work only for salary and no personal care fo children. 2) no curricular activities/ sports for children mainly below class v. 3) School takes special fee ranging from 600 qr to 900 qr dependingon class for actvities but everytime, children are asked to bring money. 4) For annual day celebartions, children asked to bring 125 QR for taking par tin fucntion. 5) It is more of Kerala village school and many teachers speak malayalam with other children which is not correct for other indian children in same class. 6) No one even principal whois from delhi bother to improve the school standard and whole management is malayali.

EDIT: Please have a look at our business pages for schools in Qatar that might be useful.

my daughter is in nursery and she cannot even write A,B,C... teachers don't teach , they just give homework which should be completed by parents... DPS is only money diggers.. every term they r increasing the fees but facility is not gud.... they have swimming pool for children but they have not started yet, after next month will be winter so no chance this year... moreover they have develop the infrastructure with our money but for everything they charge you like for swimming, sports etc they charge extra.. means that ridiculus...

Even BPS is giving very less salary about QR 3700.i heard that BPS is giving nice salary comparable to other. if this is what they are giving how can you expect good care for students ? if teachers got care then only they can care others. now teachers are in big trouble with their life. how can they think about kids ?

so we can not expect good teaching because managements are squeezing the teachers.

Lucy if the child is having fever then why are their parents sending him to school ?

Tat will not only effect his health more but also other childrens as well...

Instead its better the parent go and meet the Teachers Face2face and sort out the problems instead of sitting in the house and hatching EGGS....:(

My neighbour's son is facing too much.He comes to me for some help in Hindi book as they are malyalis. He stammers a bit and his teachers are after his life all the day.He is having fever for past few days still they are so careless about him.All the time they keep him standing in the class for small issues.

They are behaving like heartless creatures. His mother speaks very little hindi and and english a bit.She wants me to interfere but his husband is scared that they will become more strict too the kid.

School is doing well no doubt. They are simply money minting machine.

Lucy easy now.

If u have issues with tat school why dont u take it to the management and higher level people.

as far as i know, tat school is doing pretty well and most of the indians families are registering their kids to tat school.

Those who are particularly interested in raising their kids in an entirely "english" atmosphere, better going to DESS!

I am a teacher working with one of the Qatari independent schools, and i know personally about the payments given to the teachers in indian schools.

There are teachers who are dedicated, inflitrate our great tradition and values into our kids. Yet there are teachers who are Money - tuition - oriented.

My Kids are at BPS and i am happy with it.

Parents who finds mistakes with teachers just retrospect whether thay are sharing their kids efforts and progress?

Are they communicating efectively with teachers? It is not the sole responsibility only of teachers or institution to build progress in kids. What we give them at home that makes them.

I know some parents who complains about teachers and schools in general dont know even the class in which their ward is studying.

Regional issues :just think who eanrs India, her highest percentage of foreign exchange?

Regionalism on the basis of language? Hindi is our national language. Please pass through the languages written on the indian currencies. Above all we should feel INDIAN!!!!

I take tuitions.students of Dps, Ideal Indian School,M.E.S & BPS come to me.

what I've noticed is Teaching standards and quality is worst in both M.E.S and Indian Ideal.Only outstanding and God gifted students are being taken care of ,all general students are left behind on fate of their own.Teachers are just engaged in completing the syllabus whether students are able to cope or not,no matter. No note book correction,no assignments, nothing .Unit test questions are also leaked by teachers in advance,so, no creativity by children also.

Atleast these demerits I've not seen for Bps and DPS.

I know this post might be too old for your consideration but I definitely recommend Birla Public school. My kids go there and they love it. Ramuk, I disagree with you about Dr. Mohan Thomas. I have met him personally and he seemed like a very polite and erudite person. I cannot imagine a better chairman for a school than one who is well educated himself and listens to the concerns of parents (I have emailed him multiple times and he has sorted out my questions/concerns immediately).

everybody has a different yardstick to measure performance..what's good for you may not be nescessarily good for the other...hence its diificult to really form an opinion in a forum which is open and where everybody's opinions are welcome...try for yourself and see whats good for you..take each of these comments with a pinch of salt. at the end of the day we have very few options and we have to make do with whats available...its a pity ..very few expat kids compare with the kids back home academically!!!

I have studied in the Indian school here and I havent faced any issues!..Mallu lingo or not...lets admit it most of these schools give good results. And what happens when the student goes back to india for higher studies....do the students there speak Queen's English? I dont think so!

Now, yes everyone wants to have a slightly better quality of teaching in schools..for that, you need to pay the teachers well, give them a lot of benefits. But that requires money, and to do that they may need to increase the fee..And how many of us would be comfortable with that? A school is meant for everyone in the community not just for the high profile Q company folks!

Hmmm.. Not a pretty picture at all :( We were venting our frustration with lack of enforcement of the English language at MES in another thread. At least the other schools (BPS, DPS, DMIS) enforce that to a large degree. Accent is not as significant a problem as just the lack of basic conversational skills.

And this is not a "Mallu" problem (the lack of usage, not accent). It is an enforcement and will power issue from the side of the teachers/administration, and additional directives from the management itself.

I agree Mallus generally do not speak English well, but it is not as if people from other parts of India are any better..Mallus can write without grammer and spelling mistakes, whereas people from the north can speak better, but most of them cannot even write a simple sentence without including a spelling/grammer mistake.

I recently attended my kid's school annual day . The principal was north indian and his welcome speech had me gasping for air..I couldnt imagine how this guy was appointed as principal, who appointed him?.. was the guy interviewing him drunk? his english was so pathetic..

I checked with one of the teachers , and he told me that this guy's spoken English is the source of much amusement among teachers and students alike..

and the funniest thing was he was reading out a prepared speech, which one of the teachers had prepared for him..

But thankfully the quality of teachers is better than the principal, so I am not considering pulling out my kid from there...

You cannot compare these schools with the ones in India. The standard is much much lesser than any ordinary school in India.I have heard that if your kid is in MES ,BPS or IDS they will learn malayalam than English.I know that in one of these schools(i do not want to mention school's name) a lady got a teacher post just because she is a mallu.

Same could be the case with other schools too.

My kid is in DMIS(KinderG)and I am really happy with the school. They are exposed to lot of extra curricular activities in addition to their academics.Itz your choice.I wanted my kid to focus on extra curricular activities now more than studies.Kids gain confidence.

Even BPS (if you can forgo the mallu accent of ur kid) and DPS are suppose to be good.

By lloydN• 16 Jan 2010 05:24

I wud agree on the fact that BPS is turning more into a mallu mafia. I had recently bumped into the teachers from BPS and was surprised that they could teach in BPS.

Parents shud make a study before they enroll their kids in schools. BPS being a top school in India, does not mean that it wud be same in Doha...

It all depends on the management that runs it.. and their goals...( business or education)

My son used to be in BPS till 2007, when we left Qatar for good. He was in the Kindergarten section but I could visibly see the quality of discipline and education decreasing. I would agree to what the originator of this chain of discussion mentioned, that it is more of a Kerala Public School and less of a famous Indian school!

When my son started in 2006 they had better teachers & Principal Mr. A. K. Shrivastav had more control on the functioning of the school. Eventually, Dr. Mohan Thomas interfered more & more and got Keralites staffs filled up. There is nothing wrong in having Keralites but quality should not be compromised to favor a particular group (MES, supposedly the best Indian school, has Keralite majority staffs too).

I am in touch with my friends back in Qatar & all of them have moved their kids away from BPS. Interestingly DPS also had the same phase once, people moved their kids from BPS to DPS......so nothing is good forever...:)

I agree with you all that MES is a good school. They have revision tests every week for the lessons completed and regular parents teachers meeting. Though the notebooks are not very well checked in the lower classes, I think for higher classes it is the best school around. They have well experienced teachers. My neighbour's kids go to DPS and inspite of paying very high fees, she complains that some teachers are not upto the standard and they keep changing teachers every now and then

everybody .. needs to be a little more aware of the exact outcome of schools here.

just because birla school and DPS are one of the top schools in india doesnot mean that they are the best here too.. the way these schools have started having posh buildings doesnot necessarily reciprocate into excellent education,

MES school has evolved from a small unit into one of the biggest with all facilities which is mainly because of the trust of parents and students in this country...

I am really surprised, I have studied from MES Indian School, and my daughter too is studying there..... it is far better from what you have stated. My daughter's fee of class 4 is just around Qr 350 with transport. Once in a year we have to pay the special fee that is 100 riyal.

The education standard and the way teachers take care of students is remarkable, every week the children have extra curriculam activity to look forward to, they are taken to field trips, picnics. The school now covers a very large area..the only flaw I see in the school is that they need to be more paticular on young girls and boys mingling after school...they are weak on this...

you dont have to inform CBSE for change of school.. just take a TC an leave before your kids rot due to greed of business men.

I think, Birla Public School is one of the finest school of Doha. The principal Mr AK Shrivastava has done school proud despite many difficulties faced in Qatar.

Even the school teachers put their whole hearted efforts in developing career of children.

My children have been studying in this school since 2006.

I have given many suggestions to school management over a period of time and school management has responded well.

The only little drawback is shortage of space and less activity for sports. Hope school would try to encourage sports in a big way.

Birla school land was first allotted to DPS ( Delhi Public School) and the present Chairman of Birla School Dr Mohan Thomas was first Chairman of DPS and he ditched DPS Managemen t and went infor another venture with Birlla in India.

What a pity and now the 3000 plus students are a harried lot as from class I to class Xi are all huddled in thsi just 5 acre school which has no proper playgrounds. class rooms are like pigeon holes with no day light coming from any side.

floors fo the classes are dirty and the kids when come home have their school bag full of dirt.

Principal has not much say.

It is Vice Principal Mrs Shirley who calls the shots

Any way, do think before deciding the school?
