Husband and wife

My husband and I are moving to Doha in 7 weeks. I just have one question. My husband is Maori (we are from New Zealand, Maori people are dark skinned) and I am white. Will we encounter any problems being a mixed race couple???

dear benic

as a moslem country and since there's a bunch of good moslem in qatar so there's no differences whether you are white, black, yellow, orange, purple, etc.

so just like wadid 2 said "bring your marriage" and have fun here

As long as you are married you won't have any problem here! :)

Thanks everyone who posted positive comments! I really appreciate your thoughts.

However, I think that it was really unnecessary for 'shreeya' to post what you have. Assuming that I would be ashamed of my husband???

I am glad that everyone else here got what i was getting at, as yes it can be a problem in some countries! Is shreeya so naieve to think that it wouldn't?

Thank you to Serendipity who knew exactly what i was getting at!

Cnidiara - really looking forward to meeting all the ANZACs!

i am indonesian chinese and my husband is white. And we never have any 'major' problem in Qatar. And to be honest ... i see more alot of mix married in Qatar more than anywhere in the world. I hv thai gf with danish hubby, thai with my russian friend married to australian chinese, my other russian friend married to italian, my chinese girfriend from china married to italian, my eithopian gf married to a german. You name it ... there are plenty of mix here. :-) My malaysian chinese gf have a husband that half black half white, and they have a very cute daughter. You will be fine. Dont worry :-)

but knowing how racists act in many places of the world I can understand why it was put up.

Benic dear, expatriates who come in this country are all in need of friends as they have left friends and relatives back where they came from. This makes the expatriate community kind, tolerable and helpful. You will be no different than other couples living here. Try to make the most out of your life here.

Welcome to QL. You are in the right place for help and advise as well for socialising!

May the roof above us never fall in, and may the friends below never fall out!

That's rather rude of you, shreeya, to tell benic to "grow up".

I think benic was only trying to describe what her husband's appearance might look like to people who don't know what a maori person looks like.

Would she be married to him if she was ashamed of him?

And while mixed-race relationships are perfectly normal, some people do frown on them. In my experience, it's been non-white people who object to a mixed-race relationship, and some of the comments can be quite nasty, so I can understand why benic wants to ask the question.

NB: my experiences relate to incidents that happened in the UK and China, not in Qatar.

What do you mean by your husband looking slightly Indian? Or Red Indian you mean? Are you really ashamed of him? 'cause you said you are a 'white'?

Grow up Gal...For eg here you can find all these following matches;

White - Black

Indonesian - Briton

Phillipina - Briton (loads of examples)

Indian - Japanies (At least 1 match)

Philipina - German (My neighbors)

Black American - White American

They all are living happily.....

No doubt there is a small enclave of maori already here (i know of 2) and they look out for one another and you'll soon get the emails for info on meetings/socials etc. with the NZ and ANZAC crowd - the ANZAC ball is one of the best, only after St. Andrews St . paddy's and Burns night. Generally no problem with mix race marriages here in Qatar. Much bigger problem if you weren't married for example.....

no - not a problem at all...

every creed colour and race here - and plenty of mixed relationships

Some of the stuff that I have read on this website just made me feel like it might be an issue in someway. I know that sounds weird but I really had to clarify it! Just for my own peace of mind. I have never experienced anything like that here and I wouldn't assume it would happen in Qatar, but there are places in the world that are to accepting of that sort of thing!

My husband looks slightly Indian so that should be weird for some people i would imagine. As you said, when he opens his mouth it will be a different story!

Cheers for the reply!

Why are you asking this Benic? Have you experienced any problem being mixed race couple earlier anywhere?

LOL. Yes they will stare at you funny and make rude comments. OK just kidding. Qataris run the spectrum as far as skin color so it is not that big of a deal.

I am African American. I got strange looks because when I first came here they thought I was Qatari until I opened my mouth and the southern drawl came out.
