My wife's first day here, and she was followed around by 6 people for significant amount of time. One person got out of the car to hand over his card (which was obviously refused).....
That was really bad and i don't understand why would someone do such a thing. The problem is in the people who turn all of these Parks into Family parks while they are getting occupied by families only in the weekends while the rest of the week it is empty. I know that summer time is coming and a lot of people are going to these parks especially families, but most of the year this is the situation. Rumilah Park which is near the corniche get turned into Family Park, Dahal Al-Hamam near Landmark also becomes like that. So to which park can we go now?
I'm one of the bachelors here and does not go to parks most of the time, but sometimes i feel that i want to go there, sit with my laptop or a book under a tree for two or three hours having good time and go back home. All i want is to say is, it is unfair to have all the parks for families only all the week and all the year. What I'm asking for is to make Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays for families and the rest of the week it can be for all people.
I hope that I was fair in asking for that because there are no other parks here to go to and I don't want to go to a park to get kicked or have trouble with anyone while I'm not a trouble maker. All I want is some time that I can spent in peace without worrying about someone coming to ask me to leave.
Last night me & my sister was in the family park near corniche, my husband droped us there & went for a meeting.
One guy was roaming around us. where ever we sat he came there to sit & playing music in loud voice. For the 45 minutes we were there he was continously annoying us. Goverment should put more securities in public places.
i totally agree with you, i am surprised that these things don't happen much. what do they expect when they prevent men from bringing their wifes with them? and some workers can only go home once every two years so you can imaginw how will thwy feel when they see women around and i must tell you though that it's not because of the way women dress, because i wear hejab (head scarf) and cover my body yet i get men stopping their cars in front of me and asking me to get in and this happens in daylight in front of my work place!! my advice to all women is to take care but don't be too scared, still doha is much safer than many other areas of the world.
I came from a very open country wherein do as you please, but the moment i came here, i have to pull those micro minis into an ankle skirt, throw away the sleeveless and always on my cardigans(even during this time) just to feel secure. I dont go out without my husband or dare to walk alone even the sun is so high. my husband kept on reminding me... be alert, but there were 5 times already when my husbang experienced some kinda harassment (either verbally or physically)from his colleage, from a passersby, from a complete strangers and from other nationality whom we considered friend...I must say, must husband is not kinda tall, nice physique and have a flawless complexion.
The bottom line is, everybody should be alert and observant coz you'll never know when its gonna happen to you, whether man or woman.
If someone seems too pushy or is harassing a lady she has the option of taking his license plate number and reporting him to the police or calling 999 if the situation looks like it's going to get out of hand.
We've had a problem here in the past and took that route; it works.
If you're not a native Arabic speaker take someone who is with you if you're going to the official channels.
Like other countries in the Gulf region you have a disproportionate number of single men who can go for years without being in the company of a woman. I'm surprised more of this doesn't happen.
Like everywhere else in the world practice the principles of safety first. Why would anyone, let alone a woman, want to walk anywhere over here, except on the Corniche?
I also think women shouldn't be afraid of yelling at someone in public or even walking up to a guy and slapping him in the face if he's being a pest.
Be careful where you go on your own, i generally tend to stick to the big malls, even then u get weirdo's checking u out. Chances that anything is going to happen in a busy mall are very slim but if you want to explore Doha, souks, other funny little places do it as a couple. the bog-eyed staring is really not fun and they seem to have no respect for the fact that i have two kids under 3 with me, but it is only staring, whistling and hooting so far. also dress in the least provocative way possible, not to change your style totally but cover shoulders, knees and not see-through. Good luck and ps. if they get really out of hand following u around a shop call a security guard and get them kicked out! it works!!

Sunitha, they shouldn't be there. You always have the option of calling the police who will gladly take them off your hand.

Hey guys,
thanks for the advise and tips, i'll be passing these on to my wife.
Agree with the visa thing. Appears like they'r making too much of an effort to control the demographics.
still, we do expect this to be one of the safest places in the world :)

Looks like a private bodyguard service is overdue in Doha.
My wife dresses like a modern woman, acts like one, doesn't know what ankle-length skirts are and is doing just fine.
Guess she's just a one-off.

It's not that bad for women, actually.

Not that safe for women anymore at all actually. Tell her she needs to be careful, there are a lot of perverts in Doha.
