My driving here is just okay but the traffic is really one of the problem that I always encountered during rush hour. :D

and for the Landcruisers blocking you in, back into them, any accident where you have been "hit" from the rear is the other driver's fault. Maybe if more people did this, the transgressors would learn (an expensive) lesson.

The road infrastructure has not kept pace (by a long shot) with other construction. In my neighbourhood there are large blocks of flats being built/under construction and they (a) have insufficient parking and (b) the roads remain the same as they have for 10 - 15 years - they can't handle the traffic now let alone when these dozens of blocks of flats are inhabited.

As for living near your work or even the schools - it won't help - people live where they can afford to live. If you work in West Bay but your child goes to school at the opposite end of town either your pay check (which for most won't allow them to live in or near West Bay - and for most parents, they don't want their child travelling for an hour + to and from school) it's not going to happen.

Staggering school and office start timings would help, traffic would still busy but not as congested. However, that's not going to happen anytime soon. Learn to deal with it as best you can.

they did have cars 30-40 yrs back. Where you born at the time?

Well said, is it only Landcruises, GMC's etc CRV's???? that has a speed dometer the go over 100??? All cars are built with speedometers. We obey the law of the land if we driving the speed limit they flash us like you cannot believe to get out of their way...this type of attitute cannot be right they shouldnt be on the road when they they their frustration on other innocent drivers. Did they have cars here 30-40 years ago. We grew up with cars and adhere to the law of the land...if they are late WHY DIDNT THEY WAKE UP EARLIER instead of messing up someone else's happiness....

teh other is lesser evil? But both are evil!

RAsh driving is bad driving. When you break the law, no excuses, only reasoning!

bad driving-an unawareness of traffic rules having never been taught them in the first place in one's home country & driving habits that result from that unawareness.

rash driving- full awareness of all the rules but a blatant disregard for those rules stemming from an attitude of "this is my country,my car is bigger & more expensive than yours, the rules don't apply to me" kind of attitude...

So yes,as a matter of fact, they are different, the only thing similar is that both manner of drivers break the law...

precisely I would like to avoid discussing with certain nationality but although agree with some of the comments, check the statistics of accidents in Doha and you'll know who the culprits are!

@ britexpat,i'm assuming your conclusion is based on the premise that locals being a minority in terms of population here would logically be a minority of the drivers on the roads as well, fair enough but there is another way of looking at it,if out of 10 random people driving on the street,4 are guilty of rash driving & if all 4 are local, that makes them the majority offender, even though they are a minority in terms of numbers...I think it ought to clarified here the difference between RASH driving & BAD driving,MANY expats especially those from South Asia, including many of my countrymen & women that come from smaller cities, towns or villages are guilty of BAD driving habits,i.e crawling @ 60km/h in the fast lane on a 100km/h limit road, not indicating etc. but locals are guilty of RASH driving in their high powered SUVs or pickups or cars & I don't think it needs to be pointed out that higher the speed, higher the chance of an accident, apart from the fact that they will drive right down the service lane & cut into traffic when there's a buildup @ the r'about, turn left from a traffic intersection that is meant to go straight because the turn-off for the left lane was too full for their convenience, park bang outside the shop blocking about 3 cars parked in the parking spots while they stroll about shopping making those 3 people  wait for his or her highness to return & move his/her car, cutting into traffic from between the left & straight lane at a traffic light to turn left because the rest of us must be idiots for waiting two light changes to get to the front right?...& i could go on but ANYONE who drives on the roads here knows who the biggest offenders are when it comes to RASH driving & breaking traffic rules which is a completely separate issue from that of erring drivers who are unaware of the rules & driving etiquette...one bunch needs to be educated, the other bunch need to have their fancy cars impounded or their licenses cancelled & made an example of so others will learn from it,simple fines of a few 100 or a few 1000 riyals is nothing to those that have plenty to spare...so there are TWO separate issues here but i believe it's clear as daylight which of the two groups of offenders poses a higher risk to life & limb...

but it's much easier to put the blame on specific group for these people. Because if you blame others, they will turn to nationality-bashing!

Locals make up a minority of the road users. Are we saying that only the locals are to blame ?

Sorry but patience doesnt work here Qatar especially on the road the problem is that the locals are arrogant drivers and they think only their cars can go fast meaning exeeding the spead limits yet EACH AND EVERY CAR HAS A SPEEDOMETER IN THEIR CARS AND CAN DRIVE MORE THAN THE SPEED LIMIT BUT WE EXPATS OBEY THE LAW OF THE LAND WE AS THE LOCALS DONT SO WE ARE THE ONES WITH THE PATIENCE BECAUSE OF THEIR ARROGANCE ON THE ROAD....THEY DONT EVEN READ ROAD SIGNS TURNING IN A NON TURNING LANE...THEY SHOULD REMOVE ALL INDICATORS FROM THE LOCAL CARS AND THEIR HOOTERS BECAUSE I WAS TAUGHT TO USE YOUR HOOTER TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT BUT NO NOT HERE!!!!AND WHY DO THEY HAVE LANES IN THE ROAD WHEN THE LOCALS DONT USE THEM?????????????

I have to say I understand how you feel adeelijaz49!  I have been in Qatar for just over one year and the saddest and most stressful part of my day is the driving.Doha has grown so fast that the road traffic system just does not seem able to keep up.  I also noticed that the driving got much worse after the summer and I think that with the influx of new expats finding their way around the road system has something to do with it.  So it may settle down a bit.My biggest thought is that there is just not enough ROAD SAFETY ENFORCEMENT or EDUCATION  to help new drivers, Indian, Qatari, European or who ever, how to be safe on the road.  Simple techniques and rules that could make driving far more pleasant.I despair when I watch beautiful little children jumping around a fast moving car like it's a play area and even the drivers don't have seat belts on, despite the seatbelt warning signs.  I see older children abusing their drivers and telling them to go faster or cut in there or do this and the drivers oblige out of fear, endangering everyone's life.Last night I watched a crisply dressed, well presented Qatari gentleman, driving in peak traffic, without his seat belt on and talking on his mobile phone.  The stunning Qatari woman in the car in front of him was dressed to perfection with a glittery abaya and well manicured hands and jewellery to display them - also on the mobile, also no seat belt. What is the point of all the effort in your presentation when you might not even make it to your destination in one piece? I want to scream at them from the window to wake up! These are educated people, God Fearing people, but they take such HUGE risks every day with their lives.  I don't want my kids to die or be damaged in Qatar, I'm sure no one else does either?PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE CAN WE ALL TRY HARDER ON THE ROADS.  If you are a driver, try and educate yourself on safe driving rules and techniques.  The person in front of you or behind you or on either side of you, also has a family, somewhere that loves them just like you do. Take care everyone, life is precious!!!

@ LP,my bad! :)@ superpanda, my country does not have highest GDP on the planet,my country does not have a local population of around 250,000 people to spread all those millions amongst,HOWEVER,what my country does have DESPITE the fact that it is the 2nd most populous country on the planet & doesn't have the kind of wealth this country does,is a vast & immense public transport system that works EFFICIENTLY,so really there's no point comparing apples & oranges eh?...@iman1001,FIRST put a decent road network in place, then put a PROPER,EFFICIENT public transport system in place,THEN if the traffic situation is still bad,we can discuss car hopping & other solutions eh?...first things first though! :)

only solution for the traffic reduction in my opinion is reduction driving alone percentages... the mininmum drive alone cars, the minimum traffic jams...

if they control the number of cars in the rush hours..  they can reduce these jams. even if people use one car instead of three/four cars from each house, it will lead to a great benifit for all of us.. just required a proper strategy.. and hope, soon they will find a solution for this

TO  SUPERPANDA...........U know how big is our country?.each day hom mnay new vehicles coming to our roud? u cannot imagine.still we can manage our trafiic with limited traffic systems.INDIA is not like UK. looks like only Qataris buy more than one car according to some of the posters here. Many in QL would be having an average of 2 cars. Most of the cars on the road you see are owned by expats than the locals.

Locals is also buying cars for their maids... lol ..Another cause of traffic is vehicle crossing from left going to the opposite side of the road its really contributing a big traffic, most drivers dont know how to stay on the right position of the road.out of this discipline and not following traffic rules is a BIG frustration.

How does buying more cars become a problem when the population isn't increasing significantly?People started driving more than one car at a time?

By iman1001• 2 Oct 2011 09:12

with qataris buying new cars, all that means is that every qatari household will own more cars but their population has not increased significantally.unlike the expat population here. so most of u complaining about the traffic are a part of it. why dont u then start car hop services and organise amongst ur friends ?pointing fingers is easy, why dont u get off ur butts and act on it and find a solution?hmmm.....
